Activities at Lucerne House Care Home

At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.

We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.

Alex Petersen

Activities Coordinator

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.

In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.

My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Yoga Therapy

Yoga Therapy

For some time now, residents at Lucerne House have enjoyed regular yoga therapy sessions with Rachel Sherring of Yoga Stretch and Flex. Rachel has been tailoring her sessions to meet the abilities of residents and has made them really fun and enjoyable to take part in. She listens to residents to ensure they are getting the most out of the sessions.

Rachel recently started a Movement & Memories group, which is aimed at residents who live in our Memory Lane community. These sessions have been a great means of engagement and have enabled them to keep active and have lots of fun through musical reminiscence.

Alphington Church Fête

Lucerne House finished off fundraising week with a fantastic afternoon at the local church fête on Saturday 17th June. Brenda and Robin, residents of Lucerne House, were joined by Alex Petersen and Scott Foot from the activities team, to set up a chocolate tombola stall. It was a fantastic day with great weather and high spirits. In total, Lucerne House raised £43.42, which has been donated to the church to aid them in continuing their good work in the community.

Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy

Residents at Lucerne House really enjoy our regular massage therapy days. Massage Therapist, Sharon Rees, has been attending Lucerne for the past year and has become part of the Lucerne family. She provides an excellent range of services at a very competitive price. Relatives have also been singing her praises and stated that they have seen a notable improvement in the general well-being of loved ones since receiving Sharon’s services.

Junior Star Baker

Junior Star Baker

Residents at Lucerne House were very pleased to have Jacob Petersen (Son of Alex Petersen, Head of Activities) join them for their bake off recently. He competed against Beth Kingshott (Home Administrator) to see who could make the best cake. Jacob has always enjoyed baking and residents were very happy to assist him in doing so. There were lots of laughs - Jacob was very proud of the cakes he made and, as you can see by the picture, he certainly liked tasting them. Residents are looking forward to his next visit.

Karaoke Kings & Queens

Karaoke Kings & Queens

Residents at Lucerne House really enjoyed the recent karaoke afternoon. They were able to pick any song they wished to sing and there were some great performances. A highlight was when the group sang 'Summer Nights' from the musical, Grease. There was lots of laughter to be had and it was a fun-filled afternoon.

Memory Café

The grand opening of Lucerne House’s Memory Café on Saturday 20th May was a resounding success. Diane Horne (RMN) and Hailei Petersen (Care Practitioner) opened the doors to relatives and friends of the home. Those who attended were able to meet others living in similar situations and share thoughts, ideas and offer support to one another.

The café is open every third Saturday of the month, so if you are passing by Lucerne House or are interested in popping in, we would love to see you.
