Activities at Mortain Place Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Alex Leftley

Activities Coordinator

I was working in the print trade when a friend of mine became very unwell and I had to find a nursing home for her. Due to the dedication of the staff, my friend had another 18 months and I was able to take her out after being house bound for many years.

I felt that I wanted to do a job that made a difference and became a carer. I went back to school and redone my GCSE,s and then went onto do my level 3 diploma and am always enhancing my skills and knowledge. I came to Mortain Place as a senior carer on Normandy Gardens and worked my way up to Community Lead. I have chosen to move to the activities team to help support the life enrichment programme and help improve the life experience’s of our residents.

Virtual Bingo

Residents at Mortain Place are really excited as they will be joining with Eastbourne Age Concern clients on 24th June to play virtual bingo on Zoom.

We hope to get as many residents and clients from Eastbourne Age Concern involved as possible to join in at their centre. They will be playing 1 line, 2 lines and full houses, and we have prizes for each game; and a special mention for those that remember the 2 little ducks and Heinz varieties!

Ocean Travel - A Photographic Tour

Staff and residents were treated to a photographic tour and talk about the era of ocean travel by V&A Dundee Curator, Charlotte Hale. The presentation forms part of a series of six talks and virtual tours that V&A Dundee is hosting for Barchester Healthcare’s care homes and private hospitals across the UK.

V&A Dundee is Scotland’s design museum, it showcases Scotland’s outstanding design achievements and features world-class exhibitions alongside the permanent Scottish Design Galleries, and a changing programme of commissions, events and activities.

Talking About Dementia

Eastbourne Dementia Action Alliance had a stand in the Beacon Shopping centre in Eastbourne, where hey were talking to people about Dementia and Alzheimer's and answering questions on support available in their local area.

Carolyn Tyrer, HSA at Mortain Place, spent a little time with them, as Mortain Place provides dementia care as well as residential and respite care.

Mortain Place is also delivering afternoon tea baskets to people with dementia in the local community in recognition of Dementia Awareness week.

Showing Our Appreciation

Residents at Mortain Place made thank you cards and gift bags for our local emergency services. Each bag contained a beautiful handmade card from a resident and heart shaped short bread biscuits made by our Head Chef. The crews really appreciated the gesture.

Paying our Respects

Staff and residents paid their respects to the Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, on the day of his funeral, 17th April 2021.

The whole home came together to honour Prince Philip’s long and extraordinary life of service to the Queen, the British people and the Commonwealth over his 73 year marriage to the Queen, making him the longest-serving Consort to any British monarch.

Residents and staff watched the televised service that took place at St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle and observed the minute’s silence in memory of the Duke.

After the ceremony, staff and residents discussed their memories of Prince Philip and the Queen and what the royal family has meant to them over the years. They reminisced about royal tours and the Duke’s contribution to many different aspects of British life.

The Big Easter Quiz

Mortain Place got ready for Easter by joining a virtual afternoon of chocolate-fuelled fun, along with the staff and residents at over seventy Barchester care homes across the south of England, Jersey and the Isle of Wight.

The team and residents put on their best Easter bonnets and broke out the Easter eggs for an afternoon of fun activities, culminating in the Barchester Big Easter Quiz when they linked up with all the other Barchester homes in the south of the country. When they weren’t quizzing, the residents enjoyed a feast of seasonal Easter dishes prepared by the home’s chef.
