Activities at Queens Manor Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Shannon Cullen

Senior Head of Lifestyle

Hi, my name is Shannon and I am Head of Lifestyle and Enrichment here at Queens Manor. I have come to Queens Manor with 6 years of experience in the planning, activities and events sector.

I ensure that myself and the team get to  know each resident's preferences so that we can deliver a person-centred programme of events and activities within the home -  Including activities that positively impact physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. I strongly believe that creating great moments and memories for our residents and embracing their individuality with tailor made activities is the way forward.

In an era of developing technologies, we are using new ways of reaching out to family and friends - though Zoom, Skype and Facebook Portal. We hope that our residents never feel alone or too far away from their loved ones this way.   Each day I like to ensure that our residents enjoy themselves in a calm, stimulating and fun environment, whilst creating bonds with each other and staff.

Activities and Events Partnerships

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies

Life at Queens Manor Care Home

History of Botanical garden

Our homes enjoyed a wonderful virtual tour of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh with Community Engagement Manager, Charlotte Walker, and Botanic Cottage Operations Co-ordinator, Laura Gallagher.

The residents were thrilled to learn more about the history of the beautiful Garden, which is now a home to an impressive plant collection from around the world.

Charlotte and Laura also gave a demonstration of making fresh herbal tea and were happy to answer our questions.  The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all who joined.

Housekeeping Week

In celebration of Housekeeping week, we would like to take this time to thank our amazing housekeeping team at Queens Manor! Nicoleta, Linda, Emma, Iris, Tosin, Janie & Anneeta, you all do a brilliant job ensuring that the home is always looking spic and span for the residents and visitors.

Thank you all very much!

Local nursery visit

Queens Manor are delighted to announce that we have resumed our community links with our local nurseries in the community. For the past couple of weeks we have welcomed a selection of children aged between 3 & 4 into the home, along with their teachers. The residents of Queens Manor are delighted that the children are allowed back in and are looking forward to them coming in every Tuesday!

Fettes College Volunteers

For the second year in a row, we have assisted Fettes College with their community volunteer project – where they have 250+ students out volunteering in the community at one time. The group of 9 students and 3 teachers that visited Queens Manor helped us paint our new garden shed, pick up some of the fallen leaves from the gardens and then spent some time with the residents. One girl brought her guitar and performed some songs for everyone.  We are looking forward to growing our link with Fettes College over the coming months!

Ukulele Extravaganza!

What a surprise the residents had when 12 ukulele players treated them to a performance.  It was Phyllis’s birthday and as a treat, her daughters came in with their local Ukulele band and played a selection of song for the residents here at Queens Manor.  Residents, staff and visitors alike loved this!

Memory boxes

Today we had a reminiscing session using one of the memory boxes that our friends at the Museum on the Mound loaned us.  Residents loved looking through the objects which included vintage ticket stubs, cigarette tins, lipstick, coins and more!
