Activities at Rivermead Care Home

We all know that keeping active is important. We have created a wonderful culture within the home and we work together to give residents the best possible experience. We are here to ensure that residents enjoy an environment that is both stimulating and socially active. We ensure the team knows each residents' preferences, so that we can deliver a person-centered programme of events and activities. Essential to our homely feel is the strong relationships of trust we build with residents and their families and friends. The home also has its very own minibus for our numerous outings for coffee and shopping, which residents love.

Life at Rivermead Care Home

Valentine's treats with Veg for Life

We had a lovely time joining Chef Alex Connell from Vegetarian for Life for a Valentine’s-inspired virtual cookery demonstration.  Chef Alex created some delicious Valentine’s Day-inspired vegetarian desserts, which our residents had the opportunity to try too.

First, our residents sampled a wonderful sticky toffee pudding, which was absolutely heavenly. Then they tried hazelnut truffles which were a huge hit and finally they were treated to a chocolate orange cake which everyone adored.

Sea, sand and sky!

Deciding to focus on what we can do other than what we can’t, and the weather being so sunny this week, we decided to take a spontaneous outing in the Minibus. The travellers, Vivien, Rosie and Bryan, were not told the destination and one wonders even if the driver knew! As the minibus headed north through Pickering and onto the stunning Yorkshire Moors we listened to classic, soothing Elvis love songs.

’Are we nearly there yet,’ joked Vivien as we sped along sunny country roads, and as she knows the Yorkshire landscape rather well she also tried to guess where we were going. ‘Are we going to… Goathland?’ Not this time. ‘Ah, Dolby Forest? No, so then it’s Whitby? No! Ah!’ [She divined correctly] ‘We’re going to Sandsend!’

International Flower Day

The residents of Rivermead have celebrated international Flower Day.

Our residents embraced the joy of flowers by painting beautiful pieces of art on canvas, including Daffodils, our residents planted new bulbs in and around the garden area ready for spring and others enjoyed interacting with flowers as they come into bloom, courtesy of our magic table.

Chocolate treats

Is there anything better than hot chocolates with whipped cream, chocolate dusting and chocolate buttons on top when it’s snowing outside? Our Memory Lane residents think not. We had a lovely time this morning drinking hot chocolates, watching the snow and remembering what snow days were like back in the day!

Scrabble Club

Every week some of the residents from the Westow community gather around a well-worn table for another session of The Scrabble Club, the game for wordsmiths and readers of the dictionary, and this week’s has gone down in the annals of history by winner Vivien making the remarkable final score of 266, a worthy total anywhere on planet Earth! It was certainly a tense game and as the clock ticked by Viven suddenly mustered all her grey cells and came up with a word that sent a shudder through the crowd because it was worth… 69 points! There were shouts of ‘hurrah’, gasps and then applause when we realised that a small word for a type of Oriental cymbal had effectively won the game!

Vivien’s master-stroke was ‘zels’, which she had not only placed on a triple-word-score but also woven into other words! The broadside of brilliance decisively ended the match and as Vivien, gave an emotional thumbs-up and announced she was off to phone her two brothers – also keen Scrabblers – to tell them of her highest-ever personal score. Well done Vivien!

Outdoor beauty

Here at Rivermead, we are so lucky to be surrounded by outstanding beauty. To the back of our home we have a horse field, train tracks and spectacular views. Today Brenda and Andy took advantage of this, and took a walk around the outside of the building with Vixx, topping up the bird feeders, checking the grounds are in tip top condition and enjoying the sunshine in January
