Activities at Southerndown Care Home

Our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Activities Co-ordinator

I have worked at Southerndown since 2013. I enjoy providing various activities for our residents with the team, such as gardening groups, trips out in the mini bus around the Cotswolds, quiz days and entertainment performances. Amongst the many things we enjoy doing, part of my role within the home is to ensure all residents are provided the purpose in life to fulfil day to day stimulation, whether that be together, or creating individual activity to those that prefer.

Life at Southerndown Care Home

International Nurses Day

To celebrate International Nurses Day on 12th May; the anniversary of the birth of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale. We took time to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of our nurse team here at Southerndown care home.

Following a year like no other, we are incredibly proud of our nurse, and extended care teams for all they have done, and continue to do for our residents. Thank you so much you amazing team [Pictured Lovelilla, Susan, Letty and Arya]

New Jigsaws

A lazy Sunday spent with friends working together to complete one of our new Jigsaw puzzles. A 200 piece wildlife image - they loved doing it so much our residents were determined to complete it by lunch!  We seem to have a few jigsaw enthusiasts within our little community, well definitely be ordering several more.

Remembering VE Day

On Saturday May 8th, the residents of Southerndown care home remembered the events of 76 years ago by taking part in a quiz; covering top ten facts about Winston Churchill. We watched a documentary 'what the world was like on VE Day - the world’s biggest party’ which spurred on a lot of conversations and fond memories of that day. Two of our residents; Jackie and Joan remembered being on The Mall in London that very day. They said it was one big street party!

Medieval Dolls House

Over the weekend our extremely talented receptionist Ruth surprised the residents of Southerndown care home by showcasing her new creation... a handmade medieval dolls house. Ruth's attention to detail is amazing, the medieval house includes a bread oven and even small dog licking up some spilt beer from the breakfast table. Upstairs it has a four poster curtained bed and dressing table with candles!

Our residents had a wonderful time exploring the house and deciding who might live there? They felt the family were likely to be middle-classed leather workers, who perhaps sold leather goods at the local market.Ruth explained in detail how she created each item, and researched the era to make it as authentic as possible. We think her talents are outstanding.

The medieval house is the second Ruth has brought into the home to share with our residents. It brought back so many fond memories of playing with handmade toys and their own dolls houses. Thank you so much Ruth we are eagerly anticipating your next creation.

Magical Aqua Painting

During our morning arts & crafts session, our residents really enjoyed the garden themed magical aqua paints; seeing each colourful image appear gives them a real sense of achievement.

Interactive Jigsaws

We took delivery today of a fantastic array of Jigsaw puzzles specifically designed for those residents living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

The puzzle pieces are tactile and easy to place, with clear imagery that evoke memories, and stimulate conversation. We're excited to try them all, they're going to be wonderful asset to our 121 activities.
