Activities at Southerndown Care Home

Our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Activities Co-ordinator

I have worked at Southerndown since 2013. I enjoy providing various activities for our residents with the team, such as gardening groups, trips out in the mini bus around the Cotswolds, quiz days and entertainment performances. Amongst the many things we enjoy doing, part of my role within the home is to ensure all residents are provided the purpose in life to fulfil day to day stimulation, whether that be together, or creating individual activity to those that prefer.

Daily Living Activities

Today on memory lane, our residents were in a very productive mood. They requested to do some baking in our 'living kitchen' and baked the most amazing cheddar cheese and tomato bread!

It smelt so divine cooking away in the oven.

While the bread was baking to perfection, we had some time to get busy with life skills, resident Margaret is very house proud and likes to keep everything spick and span, she gave the corridors a quick sweep and even had time to show us how to 'properly' clean the windows!

She's such a star and the bread turned out to be delicious.

National ‘Hug a Shed and take a Selfie day’

On National ‘Hug a Shed and take a Selfie day’ our residents we’re overjoyed to see Chipping Norton legend Kevin Nicks - Creator of the Fastest Shed in his motorised garden shed sweeping down the driveway of Southerndown care home to visit them earlier today!

It was questions galore for Kevin; how fast does it go, do you race it, where have you raced it and has it got a turbo!?

Kevin was absolutely lovely, and confirmed he built the shed back in 2015, and since its creation it has been used to break the Guinness world records ‘world land speed record for sheds’ three times!

At the heart of the shed is a Volkswagen Passat with Quattro four-wheel drive, which Kevin refitted with a 450-horsepower V6 twin-turbo Audi RS4 engine.  The shed is totally road-worthy and Kevin always abides by the national speed limit on our roads... however, on a race track the shed has a top speed of 114mph!

We can’t thank Kevin enough for making our day so special.

Happy Birthday Nurse Nirmala!

Today we celebrated our amazing Nurse Nirmala Joshua's 60th birthday. Nirmala has worked at our home for 11 years, doing day and nights. She's a hardworking, hugely valued member of the Barchester team.

We wish you a very 'Happy Birthday' ...from all at Southerndown.

Knit and Natter

So what do you do on a typical wet and windy bank holiday Monday? The residents of Southerndown came up with a great idea - 'Knit and Natter'.

With a warming cup of tea and nice price of cake our ladies settled down to some knitting. It brought back so many wonderful memories of times spent knitting, baby clothes, jumpers and hats for our loved ones over the years.

Happy Birthday Molly!

The staff and residents of Southerndown wanted to send their best wishes to the wonderful Molly, our visiting Fall's specialist from Care Home Support Service's at Windrush House. We hope you have a fabulous birthday, thank you for your continued support... enjoy the cake!

National Tell a Story Day

Earlier this week we took part in National 'Tell a Story' Day. Resident; Barbara read eloquently several animal stories, including facts about different dog varieties, many of which her resident friends had owned in the past.

It was a wonderful prelude to the Five Sisters Zoo live link up.
