Activities at Strachan House Care Home

Today saw the launch of our Community Choir which has been in the planning for the last few months. And what an amazing time everyone had. Working with a local charity Forget Me Notes Strachan House has launched its first intergenerational community based choir within the Blackhall area.

We want to demonstrate that being in a care home doesn’t mean life stops. In fact it’s just getting started. Our aim is to promote inclusion, and invite our community alongside our residents to have the opportunity to be part of something special.”

The choir aims to be an arm that reaches into the community and touches those affected by isolation or loneliness and delivers a safe network of friends and support. Residents wanted to invite everyone  on an intergenerational level to the choir so our local Blackhall Primary School Choir has also come on board. We can wait to see how our choir develops over the next few month.

For National Carers week Strachan House went all out and treated their staff to a beach party in their wonderful grounds. Residents also wanted to celebrate National Ocean Day so the team decided to merge the two and throw a party that even the Beach Boys would have been envious of. With hot dogs, ice lollies and plenty of fun and laughter, the afternoon was enjoyed by everyone and the water pistols totally added to the fun and games.

With the vast amount of community support we have coming through our doors at Strachan House we had the perfect way to give something back. Our home sponsored the local Blackhall Children’s Sports Committee charity on the 3rd June. Residents enjoyed taking a stroll along to show their support to lots of familiar faces as their friends raced around the local park at Ravelston. And with the sun shining down what an incredible afternoon it was. Well done to everyone involved.

Residents across our services had a delightful time during a special virtual sensory storytelling event, led by Art Historian Jon Sleigh from the Historic Royal Palaces.

Jon took us on a journey to discover some of the more unusual and unexpected inhabitants of the palaces and the Tower of London, sharing fascinating stories about the pets at the palaces.

Whilst enjoying the virtual experience, our residents were treated to hot beverages, delicious biscuits, berries and cakes.  It was a truly lovely time for all.

Residents, David Leseur and Jimmy Main at Strachan House had always wanted to want to walk the fairways again and show us they still have what it takes from the Tee Box. So staff at the home made their wish a reality with their Gone Fishing 23 project.

Staff took their project idea out into the local community. Immediately Robert Dobbie CMDip Club Manager/Secretary of Ratho Park Golf Club got in touch to offer the clubs support in helping us achieve these two gents dream. Robert said he would  delighted to be a part of making their wish a reality, as he knew how much it meant to them being keen golfers. Ratho Golf Club have been amazing and pulled out all the stops to ensure David and Jimmy had an unforgettable experience. Their families all arrived a little early to the course to see the surprised smiles on their loved ones faces.

Residents enjoyed the start of summer with a welcome visit from our local nursery Cargilfield Nursery. Many sessions are held indoor but today as the sun shone we took our session outside into our wonderful grounds. With some quick cricket, football and the bean bag challenge on offer the grounds were alive with the sounds of tiny laughter and as always lots of smiles.
