Activities at Strachan House Care Home
Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.
Natasha Rubin
G’day! My name is Natasha and I am the activities lead here at Strachan House. I am Australian born and bred, braving the dark and the cold here in Edinburgh to enjoy the beautiful nature and wonderful people! I have a background in team management and design. I have always loved working with people and have a strong interest in mental health and well-being, recently embarking on a psychology degree with an interest in specialising in Art Therapy. I am working with the team to create a vibrant, engaging and person-centred home.

Life at Strachan House Care Home
World Lion Day
Staff and residents at Barchester’s Strachan House care home in Edinburgh got up close and personal with some furry friends when they celebrated World Lion Day on the 10th August. Barchester care homes all got together and travelled in convoy to Blair Drummond Safari Park to enjoy a day of viewing and learning about the African lion.
World Lion Day is an annual event to celebrate the awareness and conservation of one of our most beautiful cats in the world.
Olive Duncan and Betty Munro had a brilliant time learning about these spectacular creatures and their characteristics, reminiscing about their own pet cats and finding out fascinating facts about cats in general. Staff and residents had a fabulous day and got to see other fascinating animals along the way.
Cricket Tournament at Strachan House
And so our tournament begins. We kicked off with our first sporting event Garden Cricket and what great fun we all had!
All units within the home competed a 2 over's each game with first floor taking the first 3 points of the tournament.
Second with 2 points was our memory lane and closely followed in 3rd by ground floor with 1 point. There's still a long way to go with plenty of point up for grabs.
Commonwealth Games
We all had a great time with the opening ceremony of the Common Wealth Games.
Here at Strachan House we have decided to join in the sporting spirit by holding our own games tournament.

Opera Performance
Our homes had a fabulous time with the talented soprano Astrid Joos from Street Theatre. Astrid spoke about a selection of famous operas and our residents were treated to performances of wonderful arias from operas well-known to all, such as ‘Giuditta’, ‘Don Giovanni’ and ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’.
It was a lovely experience, truly enjoyed by all.
Fun in the sun!
What better way to keep cool, hydrated and celebrate the weather we are experiencing than to bring back a good old beach party.
Our residents got the spf 50 treatment, put their hats on and chilled out by the poolside, all under canopies. With ice cold drinks and ice lollies for everyone what a great afternoon it was. Some were even brave enough to take a paddle and even get in for a cool down. And the water pistols started an all out water war.
Safe to say we had the coolest residents around!
National Ice Cream Day
Residents and staff enjoyed a refreshing surprise today especially with the sun shining strong today. We all listened out for the Strachan Ice Cream trolley with many tasty treats travelling from door to door. We just couldn't resist making our creating own delicious treats!
