Activities at Strachan House Care Home

We had a lovely time joining Chef Alex Connell from Vegetarian for Life for a Valentine’s-inspired virtual cookery demonstration.  Chef Alex created some delicious Valentine’s Day-inspired vegetarian desserts, which our residents had the opportunity to try too.

First, our residents sampled a wonderful sticky toffee pudding, which was absolutely heavenly. Then they tried hazelnut truffles which were a huge hit and finally they were treated to a chocolate orange cake which everyone adored.

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Strachan house care home in Edinburgh got out their binoculars and bird books to support this year’s Big Garden Birdwatch initiative.

The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch is an annual event to try to understand what is happening to our native birds. The idea is to log all the birds you see in your garden, from your window or in your local park in a one hour period any time between January 28th and 30th.  Last year over 1 million people took part and between them they counted 17 million birds.  Sadly we have lost over 38 million birds from the UK skies in the last 50 years so it is vital we do all we can to protect our birdlife.

Residents had a brilliant time filling up birdfeeders, making fat balls to attract the birds before they got started and then looking up the different species in their bird books to make sure they were logging them correctly. They saw lots of different types of birds and we even had our Squirrels coming for lunch.

Staff and residents at Strachan house welcomed in the Year of the Tiger with a day of celebrations and activities.

Inspired by Chinese culture and traditions, lucky red envelopes were exchanged and the home was decorated with hanging red lanterns. Residents learnt all about the traditions and superstitions of Chinese New Year.  Head chef Paul Dows cooked up an oriental feast for lunch and residents enjoyed the delicious food washed down with pots of Chinese tea. The residents also enjoyed some cultural music and dance,  we also went a virtual tour to see last year’s celebrations and there wonderful fireworks,  we also had a discussion about the animals associated with the Chinese zodiac.

A carer at Strachan House has received a prestigious 15 Year Service Award in celebration of working at Barchester Healthcare for 15years. Allan Quillao Carer started at Barchester in January 2007 and has worked with residents and their relatives to ensure that their needs have been met over the years.

Eileen Crawford, General Manager said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating 15years of loyal service with Allan Quillao He has demonstrated his dedication and loyalty to this home and its residents year after year. I speak for all of us here at Strachan House when I say that I’m looking forward to many more years of working with Allan.

Allan Quillao was presented his gift and his 15years of service badge from Daria Honiewska unit manager for first floor.

A brilliant day had by all the Staff at Strachan House Care home. The staff were provided a pizza treat as a massive thank you to all the kind and caring employees who have worked hard over the last couple of months.  The staff very grateful for a wonderful afternoon being treated to there lunch and been rewarded for all their hard work and dedication and are very grateful for this kind gesture.

Today our residents at Strachan House Care Home will raise a glass and celebrate Burns Day, Today we have had a fun filled activities planner which has consisted of designing our own kilts, we also looked up of which clan tartan we all belonged.  Our residents also had a game of haggis tossing which was such a giggle. We also had a virtual tour of Burns birth place Alloway and a tour around the Burns museum which our resident really enjoyed and found really interesting. In the afternoon we had a Scottish quiz, we also had a reminiscing session and a look back at his famous poems and we had our very own poem competition. We also had our chefs own home made shortbread which was washed down with some Iron Brew and some residents had a slightly stronger tipple (a wee dram.)

Burns Night is celebrated on January 25 every year to commemorate the Scottish poet Robert Burns.
