Activities at Strachan House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Natasha Rubin

Activities Coordinator

G’day! My name is Natasha and I am the activities lead here at Strachan House. I am Australian born and bred, braving the dark and the cold here in Edinburgh to enjoy the beautiful nature and wonderful people! I have a background in team management and design. I have always loved working with people and have a strong interest in mental health and well-being, recently embarking on a psychology degree with an interest in specialising in Art Therapy. I am working with the team to create a vibrant, engaging and person-centred home.

Life at Strachan House Care Home

Community Kindness

The lovely team at Poundland in Leith together with the community have surprised us here at Strachan with a gift of goodies to all of our staff in a show of appreciation of our care and support to residents during these difficult times. We’re all delighted with our treats and know you’re all working hard so we’re really grateful to you for thinking of us.

VE Day

At Strachan House, we joined together to commemorate 75 years since the end of Second World Ward.   Staff and residents, along with people all over the UK, joined together for the ‘Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2’. Residents who fought for our country stood among us for a two minute silence and finished with a salute.   We enjoyed a British Tea Party accompanied by war time music and a sing along. Residents took part in socially distanced activities and games and tucked in to delicious victoria sponges, homemade scones and all sorts of goodies.   Many of our residents have very clear memories of the Second World War, and reminisced about their experiences, it’s a privilege to remember and celebrate with them.

Thank You Key Workers

Proudly displaying our Key Workers banner in front of our home. We’re so grateful to all key workers country wide and closer to home. We also so appreciate the kindness and support shown to Strachan House by our community during this time. We’re proud to be working together to care for our residents and support each other.

Easter Bonnet Making

Easter is such a special time of year and we love celebrating it here at Strachan House. We’re getting ready to dazzle this Easter weekend by making and donning our own beautiful bonnets.

Somewhere over the rainbow!

Residents of Strachan House  have been busy making ‘Rainbows’ which they have displayed along the homes front entrance in recognition of the NHS and all key-workers. The idea is that members of community display rainbows in their windows or front entrances so that children can go ‘rainbow spotting’ when out for their exercise with family.  The colourful displays are brightening up everyone’s day! The Facebook group has over 90,000 members and the home is delighted to be part of the community spirit.

Residents enjoy a ‘virtual’ trip to the races

Residents at Strachan House enjoyed a day at the races from the comfort of their own home this week. To the delight of residents there were fun and games, room to room throughout the day. Colleagues dressed up as jockeys and even a virtual horse to gee up everyone at the home as they were assigned their premium seats with a perfect view of the finish line. Residents also enjoyed a flutter with chocolate prizes and a special afternoon tea.

Lynne Hiddleston, activities coordinator said: “We wanted to create a special day at the races which all of our residents could enjoy. Everyone had a fantastic time and they especially loved reminiscing about their trips to the races. There was a wonderful atmosphere here, one we won’t forget.”
