Activities at Strachan House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Natasha Rubin

Activities Coordinator

G’day! My name is Natasha and I am the activities lead here at Strachan House. I am Australian born and bred, braving the dark and the cold here in Edinburgh to enjoy the beautiful nature and wonderful people! I have a background in team management and design. I have always loved working with people and have a strong interest in mental health and well-being, recently embarking on a psychology degree with an interest in specialising in Art Therapy. I am working with the team to create a vibrant, engaging and person-centred home.

Life at Strachan House Care Home

Big Hearts All the Way

Clive loves getting his Hearts Gazette delivered through the post from the Big Hearts Association each month. Clive has great memories from being a child going to the local football stadium to watch his beloved Hearts Football Club compete. The Gazette brings so much joy to Clive, and he always likes to share his stories as he reminiscences about his favourite team.

Books donated to the home

Residents and staff at Strachan House were recently overjoyed to receive dementia friendly painting books from a local lady called Hannah who works for a company called Usborne books. Hannah used her commission and her bonus to buy these books for the residents.

The gift of dementia friendly painting books and story books were fabulous and a gesture which Residents will enjoy as part of their regular arts and craft sessions.  Colleagues also received personal discount cards for the store.

National Cream Tea Day

Strachan House care home in Edinburgh brewed up a storm for National Cream Tea day on the 26th June.  Finally putting an end to the controversial debate of cream before jam for the Cornish tradition or jam before cream as part of the Devonshire tradition, Strachan House enjoyed homemade scones both ways with a fes-tea-val of herbal and classic teas.

Residents at the home enjoyed a selection of sweet and savoury treats including cucumber sandwiches, chef’s fabulous homemade tiffin, donuts and a choice of different teas Lockdown has allowed residents to use their creativi-tea to become tech savvy, and as such family and friends were able to join the par-tea, via video call.

Fun in the sun

We’ve been able to relax in our beautiful gardens and take advantage of the glorious weather this week here at Strachan House. Everyone chatted about how much better we felt after a breath of fresh air and being able to feel the sun on our faces and check in with the progress of our colourful garden. Our sunny afternoon was topped off with a surprise visit from our friend the deer. Although with her finding the greenery very tasty I don’t think gardener Ian was as delighted as we were!

Fruity Treats

Residents and colleagues at Strachan House were delighted to answer the door to accept a special delivery from their local taxi firm, Edinburgh City Private Hire Ltd, who have been dropping off some healthy pick-me-ups for the past few weeks!

The bags were filled with delicious fresh fruit for everyone to enjoy and in recognition of the home's hard working, dedicated team supporting residents during this difficult period.

On behalf of Strachan, residents and colleagues would like to pass on their gratitude for being considered at this time of uncertainty and hope everyone stays safe and well.

Posters of Hope

Helen Yousaf is an artist and Minister from Romford and she has been creating encouraging posters and sending them to frontline workers across the country. Strachan House received “Posters of Hope” last week and we love them. We really enjoyed picking out our favourites and putting them up on display. Every Poster of Hope is unique and we feel very lucky to have these beautiful pieces in our home, bringing a smile to everyone who sees them. Thank you from all of us.
