Reviews for Tennyson Wharf Care Home
What our families say on carehome.co.uk
"Sadly Tennyson Wharf is very smart but doesn't quite deliver. My father complained of being cold overnight and decided to combat the problem by keeping his clothes on. Why wasn't this solved by turning up the heating and/or using more bedding? We tried ringing him and were told he'd phone back - it never happened. There was more but the above demonstrates the problem."

"I wish to compliment you on your carers, nurses, cleaners, gardener, hairdresser and above all the lovely receptionist............ I have visited for 16 weeks as a volunteer visiting a lady in your care, and just really think it is a wonderful atmosphere you provide for your 'extended family' as that's what it feels like to me! Well done and thank you, you restore my faith!!!"

"From the very beginning, I have only ever experienced friendly warm service form all the staff members at Tennyson Wharf. My wife has been looked after extremely well, sometimes in difficult circumstances. Always given a friendly greeting by all the staff who I meet on my visits. The carers and all staff members care, which is the most important aspect of their job."

"Excellent nursing services by staff in administering medications and nutrition via the PEG. A hardworking dedicated team of carers providing excellent hygiene care with dignity and empathy. Resident rooms are kept clean and tidy every day. Laundry staff provide excellent services of clothes washing and ironing. Activities provided are diverse and support resident social interaction and make them feel valued and happy. A better usage of the smart screen in the café area to project music concerts for residents on days when no activities are provided."

"My husband is a regular visitor to this facility and I can't think of a better place for him to visit and meet other males. Wednesday is the highlight of his week as for the rest of the week he is under a petticoat government. The staff are amazing, nothing is too much trouble and we are always sure of a smiling face."

"My mother has struggled with depression since the death of my stepfather 3 years ago, had lost all interest in life and what was happening around her. I discovered that she could go to Tennyson Wharf for the day and suggested it. She has visited various care homes over the years to see friends and relatives and wasn't impressed with the idea but agreed to go and look. One short visit persuaded her to give it a try. I dropped her off at 10 am looking forward to it but slightly nervous as she wouldn't know anyone. I collected her at 4 pm and couldn't believe the difference in her. She walked out with her shoulders back, her head up and she was no longer shuffling like a little old lady. That transformation continued through the following week as she talked daily about what she'd done and when we arrived for the second visit and she was greeted by her name as soon as she set foot in the door I knew it was all going to be ok. She is now planning a stay when I go on holiday."

"From the moment they allowed me to be admitted very late in the evening and got me to bed on the first night everything has been wonderful. The staff are all helpful and lovely and kind and the food. The chef is surely one of the top chefs in the country. All facilities excellent."

"Good Points: Comfortable; clean; spacious and relaxing environment. No-one rushing about or shouting - thus keeping stress for residents and visitors to a minimum. Staff are genuinely caring and all seem to know where residents are at any particular time; however, residents are free to 'wander' without being 'told off'. This creates a lovely atmosphere. More like a hotel, to be honest. Menu looks good and creative. Catering staff are very tolerant of late-comers (and the inevitable 'moaners'). Tea and coffee freely available. Visitors are encouraged to self-serve, though staff are always at hand if required. Great views from Mum's room; and the sitting and dining rooms. The room is exactly the right size and is NOT stiflingly hot. Easy to contact a senior member of staff if necessary. Loads of activities, including Mum's favourite - the mum and toddler group Bad Points: Apart from the cost (!), there are NO bad points. I would recommend this Home without any hesitation."

"My first experience was being invited to help with the entertainment at the official opening. Being resident on the nearby estate, I have continued to support fundraising and open days. As a result of this, I have become friends with a couple of residents and on a number of occasions enjoyed an excellent meal in their company. All the staff come over as very caring and considerate."

"Good - spotless, bright and cool. Good facilities and location. Good food. Attentive and friendly staff. Not so good - confusion caused due to invoicing policy i.e one person stated at end of 2-week respite care, another stated it should be paid up front."

"We were very impressed by the reception we received from a member of staff who was so happy and welcoming and obviously was really proud of the care and facilities on offer. We have found this to be true - everyone has been so kind to mum. The care has been brilliant - my mum has been transformed in one day! From not wanting to get out of bed and get dressed, my mum has been showered, hair is done and she has eaten a wonderful meal with lovely residents in the dining room. Lovely environment, clean and stimulating, friendly and personable manager with a bouquet of flowers for mum to welcome her. Thank you."

"My very elderly mother died in March of old age and infections. The care my mother had was wonderful and every possible thing was done for her comfort. The staff were extremely caring with both her and us and we were delighted with the happy family feel of the care home from everyone involved including cleaners, gardeners, tea trolley, reception and of course, nurses and carers. It is an extremely high standard home, very clean and nice smelling. Well done!"

"Throughout the 14 months of my relative's residence, I have been extremely impressed with the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff. It is clear it is a 'happy ship'. In addition, my relative was treated with courtesy dignity and respect as well as with patience and prompt attention to her needs. Barchester is, in relative terms, expensive, but 'you get what you pay for'. Doubtless, I shall be booking in in a few year's time."

"Having visited residents in other care homes in recent months, I am impressed by the overall ambience of Tennyson Wharf Care Home. It is a pleasure to see my friend happy here despite his physical limitations. The situation and surroundings are perfect and the cleanliness, staff, food and facilities are far ahead of those other homes I have visited. However, all of these advantages are reflected in the fees and it is not for those of limited means."

"My husband has had three stays at Tennyson Wharf Care Home. The staff are excellent food is better than a lot of first-class restaurants, rooms are lovely with a good outlook and very clean. I like the time staff spend with my husband nothing is too much trouble. We have to travel 35 miles to Tennyson Wharf. There are two others a lot closer but the standard is no way as good. That's why I am happy to travel."

"My mother always stated firmly that she never wanted to go into a home. However, a fall and subsequent hospital stay left her too weak to go home, her Alzheimers had gone into overdrive and respite care was required. Barchester Tennyson Wharf offered amazing space, with large private, ensuite bedrooms, spacious lounges and wide corridors. My mother was used to her own company and privacy and did not want to feel 'packed in'. The quality of the menu, food freshly cooked on the premises and a remarkable variety of choices Sufficient staff (mostly permanent) treated the residents with genuine kindness and dignity The convenience of location - means no traffic problems shortening the time available to visit. After a few days, my mother relaxed, clearly enjoying herself; much to her surprise. The superb food, leisurely meal times during which staff encouraged conversation and interaction. The consistent level of care and attention given to all completely won her over. We strongly recommend this home."

"On arrival, you feel you have entered a 5-star hotel. It does not feel like a care home which is important to a new resident who is afraid of staying in a home. The level of care, the most important, is first class. The standards of accommodation and facilities support the high standard of care. Would I want to stay there? Yes!"

"My mother had a short stay receiving the best palliative care anyone could wish for. Excellent nursing, treated with dignity, compassion and dare I say 'love'. The care also extended to all the family. All I can say is thank you. Our mum's last days were as perfect as we could hope for given how poorly she was."

"Respite care for mum-in-law after a hospital visit (due to a fall). The staff are always smiling, courteous and treated both mum-in-law and family with tolerance and understanding. Facilities and surroundings fabulous, food excellent and a "can-do" attitude made her stay easier for all concerned a reluctant resident she was sad to leave."

"I have the pleasure of visiting one of your residents on a weekly basis and also a couple of other friends who were staying with you for a week to recover from an operation. My personal experience was and is very positive. My friends are always in a happy mood and this reflects how comfortable they are. I love the friendly atmosphere I feel in every visit and also to see other residents having fun with activities for their ability."

"All the staff at Tennyson Wharf are kind, compassionate, amiable and supportive. Every effort is made to ensure the dignity and safety of residents. Care of a dearly loved husband could never be the same as if he were still at home looked after and cared for by loving family but this must be the very best next thing. The staff and management are at pains to support both the residents and the family and I'm assured it will become my second home too."

"One should expect the daily contact with the working world to slide, and Tennyson which is a no 1 care home, with superb staff and facilities. I would prefer it being closer to the local services to be reached on foot. I also appreciate why it is not. I would recommend it to anybody."

"My partner has been in Tennyson Wharf with dementia since November 2015 and prior to permanence, several times for respite. I can only say that I have been very fortunate to find such a lovely home for him. Everyone there is wonderful - administrative staff and carers alike. The care is fantastic, the food is fantastic, the home is fantastic and my partner is superbly cared for and very happy in his own little world. Can I say anymore! Yes I would recommend - I've told my children that should I need care in the future there is only one place I wish to go!!"

"After a poor experience of care, my mother moved to Tennyson Wharf Care Home. The difference in care and support has been truly amazing. The staff are caring, compassionate and professional. Nothing is too much trouble. As a relative, I have been involved in all decisions relating to Mum's care. My mother and the rest of the family have always been treated with respect. Facilities are excellent. I would have no hesitation in recommending Tennyson Wharf to anyone with a relative with dementia."

"Very good quality staff. Many extremely caring and committed. Relatively limited movement of staff which is vital, as consistency and familiarity with residents with dementia. Facilities excellent and kept very clean. Rooms great size and very pleasant. Lounges are fabulous with 'proper' furniture...no plastic sets here. The only improvement I'd like to see is more physical activity. My mum has put on a considerable amount of weight, having been very physically fit on entering the home. This seems to be a neglected area. The reception area is sometimes unattended which makes it difficult for visitors to get in."

"The staff are very kind and I always find them very helpful, they look after my husband really well. Personal things sometimes disappear and then sometimes reappear, perhaps that's because residents wander into each other's rooms. The home is always spotless and my husband always enjoys his food."

"Before she came to this care home, we visited a couple of others in order to make a comparison. They were not in the same league for all the reasons below. We were very impressed with the care and compassion she received here along with the other residents. Obviously, the hardest thing for all the residents is their loss of independence but in her case, she was definitely unable to care for herself and keep safe at home. When we visit she always seems content and relaxed and has a genuine rapport with carers and residents. Thank you for all you do."

"The care home is expensive, sometimes there don't seem to be enough staff to justify the money. But all staff are without exception friendly and competent. Occasionally messages don't get passed on, e.g. about taking residents out. Sometimes the cleanliness of the bathroom and bedroom are not quite up to standard. Activities staff do their best, perhaps not always tailoring to individual residents competencies and wishes. More trips out would be good. Overall the home has a good atmosphere."
