Activities at Tennyson Wharf Care Home

Our teams are trained to enrich the lives of residents through stimulating the mind, body and soul, and taking the time to learn about each person to ensure everyone receives support that adds enrichment to their life.

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Rebecca Harrowing

Activities Co-ordinator

Hi my name is Rebecca, I started working at Tennyson Wharf in July 2024.

Previous to starting at Tennyson Wharf I have lived in many countries and worked as a supply teacher and administrator in Bahrain in the Middle East - I have also worked in scouting programme groups in both the USA and UK.

Whilst I have worked with children for a lot of my life, working with the elderly is always been something I have been passionate about. I believe that everybody has a story to tell and our residents life stories all add value to Tennyson Wharf.

Outside of work I enjoy walking, gardening and going to the cinema.

Activities and Events Partnerships

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies

Irish Dancing for St. Patrick's Day!

It was a real treat to watch Sorrel perform for us. Sorrel and her dance partner are only 15 and about to take part in National Championships, so we were so grateful that they could squeeze in a performance for us.

Residents loved the costumes and the various styles of dancing with tap shoes and the soft form shoes. Patrick, one of our residents from Ireland, said it was ‘just grand!’

Opera Singer Gabriella visits for the first time

It was a long-awaited visit and very well worth the wait! Our residents were amazed and touched by the talent of Gabriella.

Her vocal range was stunning, and her repertoire ensured there was something for everyone. Our residents loved that she took the time to talk about the songs and then chatted with everyone individually after the performance.

Joan said her voice was incredible and couldn’t believe the high notes she was able to hit!

Cathedral Restorations Talk

A thoroughly interesting talk was given by Mike Graves, Head of Restorations at Lincoln Cathedral. Our resident, Lyndon, is friends with the Dean of the Cathedral and between them arranged for Mike to come and visit and present a history of the Cathedral and current restorations.

Residents were fascinated to know all the work that goes on ‘behind the scenes’ and the skill of the artisans. Lyndon was pleased to be able to provide this wonderful opportunity for our residents. They really appreciated his efforts, with Ray and Hilary saying it was a morning well spent.

Mike has offered us a tour of the works so that we can actually see the team in action. Our residents are very keen about this trip!

A trip to Mauritius

One of the Group Leaders from our local church visited for regular monthly worship. She also brought her grandson, who was staying with her. We enjoyed chatting with Micah, who was visiting her from Mauritius. Our residents were interested in his travel experiences, and he offered to come and do a presentation for us.

We were so impressed with his PowerPoint presentation and his confidence. Micah is only 16 and this was his first public speaking engagement! He easily won over the 25 residents that had gathered to watch the presentation and ask questions. There were beautiful wildlife photos that he had taken, interesting facts about the history, geography and housing on the island. It certainly looked like paradise. We might even have been a little jealous!

Micah has now returned home but said he will visit the UK in December and would love to come and visit with us again.

Harmony Links Barber Shop Choir

By coincidence, we were able to reconnect with Harmony Lincs Barber Shop Choir and invite them to come and sing for us. They had sung at Tennyson Wharf previously, but members and staff had changed and contacts were lost as time passed by.

At our Christmas Fayre we hired a Santa costume, and it just turns out that the costume hire company was owned by a member of Harmony Lincs. We were delighted to be able to hear them perform once again. We enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of all the classic songs from Country Roads to How Great Thou Art. Due to the size of the full choir and the size of our home, only a third of the choir came, but their voices echoed as if dozens and dozens were present! A very touching moment came when they dedicated a song to our former resident, who was also a former choir member.  We are grateful for their visit and such community support.

Valentine's Day Celebrations!

We had a beautiful time celebrating LOVE! Valentine’s Day would not be Valentine's Day without sweet treats and handmade crafts. We enjoyed baking and icing cookies after watching the Barchester Virtual Cookie decorating class. Eating them was far more fun! We made tree decorations and woollen hearts to decorate our home.

Our favourite thing was making a ‘reel’ of what love means to each of us. We each wrote a message on a card and held it up for the camera.  It was a wonderful afternoon with some really touching messages.
