Activities at Waterside Court Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Life at Waterside Court Care Home

The Resident Experience

It's a lovely, sunny day and our Resident Ambassador is ready to welcome our newest lady to Waterside Court.

We know that moving into a home is a huge decision, so our Resident Ambassador, who has been through the journey herself, is the perfect person to meet and greet new residents.

We also like to practice the person-centred approach straight away. As this lady loves Baileys and Jelly Babies, we put together a little welcome package for her to make her feel more welcome.

Working with Driving Miss Daisy, Didcot

We met with lovely representatives from Driving Miss Daisy (Didcot) today, whose companion drivers collect people from their door, drive them to their destination, provide whatever help they may require and take them safely back home.

Whilst Waterside Court has it's own minibus, services like this provide residents with further choice and flexibility, which is all part of the person-centred approach. An added bonus is that all of their companions are Dementia Friends, which works well alongside Waterside Court's aim to make Wallingford a Dementia Friendly Community.

A day in the life of an internal inspector

Mr Morley, a resident at Waterside Court care home, has had a fascinating and fulfilling career, which included designing and building a local Golf Club and conducting safety checks to ensure compliance.

Upon moving into Waterside Court, Mr Morley told staff that he likes to be helpful and wants to continue utilising his skills when he moved in. The team subsequently create time for him to work with the Head of Maintenance, Matt Hanson. The two gentlemen now carry out safety checks and audits across the home together, including checking water temperatures and inspecting the condition of every bedroom in the home.

Mr Morley even identified that the dining room chairs sometimes made an unpleasant squeaking sound when moved against the floor. His solution was to add some felt pads to the bottom of the chairs, an idea that the team wholeheartedly supported by promptly ordering the pads in. Once the home received the pads, Mr Morley was delighted to assist Matt with fitting them to the chairs.

Lorraine Ball, General Manager at Waterside Court, said: “Our care is truly person-centred. We like to enable our residents and keep their lifestyle as active and as fulfilling as possible. It was lovely to learn about Mr Morley’s accomplished career and we immediately knew that he would benefit greatly from working with our Maintenance team.”

Pre-dinner drinks

Residents enjoyed a delightful selection of nibbles and pre-dinner drinks in Benson Lounge this evening.

Activity Coordinator, May Kidner, said: "Tuesday's are our pamper days - our 'take it easy' days, which is what the residents decided. So what better way to enjoy an afternoon than to kick back in our comfortable lounge as we indulge in a selection of biscuits, sweets and chocolates whilst drinking some refreshing bubbles!"

Dartmoor Zoo Virtual Experience

Residents at Waterside Court had a lovely morning watching a virtual experience, kindly hosted by Dartmoor Zoo.

We had a wonderful time learning about how the team care for their animal collection, conservation work, plus their breeding and research projects. We even got a behind-the-scenes look into their tiger enclosure and watched a live training session!

World Chocolate Day!

World Chocolate Day has been one of our favourites for residents and staff at Waterside Court!

Residents started the day with a chocolate milkshake competition, with different chocolates and ingredients being used to make lots of tasty creations. We then took to the Lifestyle Kitchen to bake a wonderful cake that was then decorated with chocolate icing and fresh strawberries. Residents were then treated to a delectable selection of fluffy marshmallows and mouth-watering strawberries that were coated in different types of melted chocolate.
