Activities at West Abbey Care Home

Our Activities Coordinators are constantly striving to mentally and physically stimulate those we support by organising group and individual activities for anyone and everyone to participate in. There are regular outings in the minibus to nearby places of interest, as well as visits from the Donkey sanctuary, musicians and entertainers. We also host evenings such as our Cheese & Wine evenings and BBQ's in the summer, that we encourage relatives to come to. Activities are one of the most important aspects of a care home, so it is essential that our team are dedicated to ensuring that residents are entertained. We encourage our residents to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can to ensure that life at West Abbey is fun and active for all.

Nikki Griffee

Activities Coordinator

Hi, I'm Nikki and I originally came to work at West Abbey in 2018 and have worked in various roles supporting our residents.

What I enjoy about my job is that no two days are the same and most of all, I thoroughly enjoy everyday activities with the residents including 1-2-1 room visits all the way to professional singers visiting us. A firm favourite of mine and the residents at West Abbey is using our mini-bus weekly and visiting local nature hot spots! I look forward to welcoming you to our home.

Life at West Abbey Care Home

Today we went on a cruise sipping mocktails!

Residents had a brilliant afternoon joining Paul Hawkins and Lisa Richards from Unilever for an exciting Virtual Cruise experience. Our residents were welcomed with mocktails as Lisa and Paul took them on a magical journey to 3 mystery destinations, which were uncovered after a few clues.

Paul demonstrated how to create a few of the local traditional dishes, and our amazing chef and kitchen staff pre made the dishes for us to try while we watched. All dishes were very tasty

The Alpacas came to visit!

Residents were delighted to welcome a visit by two beautiful Alpacas today, their coats were so soft when we stroked their necks and we had to admire their long eyelashes too! They are so tame they happily went in the lift to meet our residents in memory lane and those who prefer stay in their bedrooms - lots laughter and smiles today

Special Tea Party!

Today we had a fabulous Mad Hatters Tea Party. A really fun afternoon with the activity team all in costume, our vintage china with lots of cakes and tea followed by a good old quiz all about ‘Alice in Wonderland’.

Don’t worry no one was late to this important date !!

Lifetime Achievement Award for our General Manager

We are proud to announce that Helen Colaco, currently our General Manager, has been crowned Lifetime Achievement Award Winner for the South in this year’s Barchester Care Awards and is through to the national round of judging.

More than 2,900 nominations were received from Barchester care homes and hospitals across the UK. All entries were a very high standard and Helen, initially ‘surprised’ and then over the moon to have been named the winner for the division, beating hundreds of other nominees..

Well done Helen and big congratulations from everyone at the West Abbey.

Pamper day in the Salon!

Annette, West Abbey’s hairdresser, visits us every week and works her magic on the residents hair!

Everyone always looks a million dollars when Annette has been to visit, you can certainly sense the excitement when she's in the building, and we are so very lucky to have our own in-house, purpose built salon

Supporting Preston Primary PTA

Our activity team took West Abbey out to the Summer Fair held by our local school, Preston Primary, and organised by their PTA. We saw some of our family and friends from the home which was lovely, also it was our pleasure to meet Evie the Mayor of Yeovil and Christine from Yeovil Press. We raised £36.50 on the splat the rat and the Pirate Treasure map game, to which we donated back to the Preston Primary PTA. Our goodie bags were a great success too!
