Activities at Woodland View Care Home

Activities at Woodland View

Woodland View is passionately committed to providing residents with a varied choice of entertainment, social, health and well being, craft and relaxation based activities.

Activities will all be meaningful and based on the likes of residents and will continue to evolve depending on our residents. The activities provided will also include involvement from other local community based organisations and are open to all residents, family and friends of residents. Our activities will be facilitated by staff from all departments as well as invited guests. Families are also enthusiastically encouraged to play a part in activities when possible.

There will always be at least one person at every activity who has been DBS checked to ensure the safeguarding of our residents. The dignity of our residents and our respect for them is at the centre of everything we do, each and every day.

We are always reviewing and changing our schedule of activities to be a centre of excellence and actively invite feedback and suggestions for new and meaningful activities and ideas.

Petra Hardman

Activities Coordinator

Hi my name is Petra and I'm the Activities Coordinator here at Woodland View. I love seeing the difference that activities can make to each individual, and finding out what interests they have and ensure I incorporate that into our activities here.

I love music and drama coming from a musical background as a singer all over the country, music is important to me and I feel it makes such a difference to everyone, it evokes memories, and creates happiness. I also love to boost residents self esteem by creating pampering sessions and having one to one time to relax and reminisce.

Remembrance Corner

Remembrance Corner

Residents came together ahead of Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday to remember those who were loved and lost, but also to recall the good memories of those times too.

Residents wrote down memories on slips of paper, which were shared with others, for a very personal account of the darkest days of the past, but balanced these with better memories when happiness seemed hard to find.

Woodland View created 'Remembrance Corner', and there were many who found reading the various contributions a very moving experience.

Residents will be welcoming pupils from the Queen Boudica Primary School later this month, repeating a similar event from last year, where a Q&A session was held for two groups of 30 pupils from the school. Last year's event was very successful and this year will be taking a similar format, but with a focus of 'What is Armistice Day & Remembrance Sunday and why do we have them?'

Top Dog!

Top Dog!

Following on from the Barchester Care Awards in Manchester, a certain little lady was unable to attend, despite her being one half of a winning combination.

Colin Bennett won both the divisional and national 'Volunteer of the Year Awards'. However, the award also belonged to the cute part of the double act (no offence, Colin!). Martha delights residents each week and gives as much affection to the audience as they give in return.

Resident, Mary, was chosen to present a winner's medal to Martha, along with a special bag of treats for her to enjoy (Martha that is – not Mary!).

As a one-off, Martha sat on the chair next to Mary and remained there for the rest of Colin's weekly performance – and she appeared to thoroughly enjoy the show!

National Treasures

National Treasures

It's official! Woodland View has its very own national treasures – and we can prove it!

Colin and his lovely dog, Martha, visit Woodland View every Monday morning, and Colin plays piano and tells related anecdotes to residents. Colin's sessions are hugely popular and bring great delight to residents.

Colin and Martha were nominated for the Barchester Healthcare Divisional 'Volunteer of the Year Award' for the central region – and won! Both Colin and his wife, Sue, were subsequently invited to attend the Barchester Care Awards Luncheon in Manchester.

There were four finalists for the national award, and both Colin and Sue were shocked to hear Colin's name as he was announced the winner. Colin was presented with his award by Barchester CEO, Pete Calveley, and Director of Care, Risk & Compliance, Mike O'Reilly.

Martha wasn't able to attend the awards ceremony, but plans are in place to have one of the residents present Martha with her own special award.

Well done, Colin and Martha – we're all so pleased you have gained recognition that's so richly deserved.

Spare-Tyre in 'The Garden'

Spare-Tyre in 'The Garden'

London-based touring theatre company, Spare Tyre, spent a day at Woodland View, performing two shows of their production, 'The Garden'. The interactive experience is specially designed to engage with those in later life, especially people living with dementia.

Dried leaves, fake snow, puppets, water, projected seasonal backgrounds, live music and sound effects came together to create a magical, non-verbal show.

The team of three – Nick, Yolanda and Charlotte – brought each of the residents into the world they had created and each interacted with the performers as everyone travelled through the seasons of the garden.

Residents who would not normally be capable or interested, were clearly engaged. You only had to watch their faces and see their reactions to know this is a wonderful and effective team and production.

Barchester's 25th Birthday

Woodland View welcomed the opportunity to celebrate a very special Birthday. Barchester Healthcare's 25th!

The celebrations were focused on a particular day and what a day it was. In the morning Niki Talyor had everyone moving to a beat as part of her weekly 'Dancing Chairs' session. Yes, there were lots and lots of balloons scattered around the floor but that just added to the fun!

In the afternoon residents enjoyed a record turnout for our biggest party yet. Tessa Collitt sang her heart out for over an hour and the audience sang, clapped, danced and joined in playing a range of instruments. As is this wasn't enough, the balloons from the morning came into play and were enthusiastically bounced around. Oh and the residents love the bubble making machine so that too made an appearance.

All in all, it was a busy and physical day so residents were ready for the lovely afternoon tea which included cucumber, egg, cheese and ham finger sandwiches. Of course there were cakes! Tea, Coffee & Hot Chocolate helped everything go down the right way.

Barchester Healthcare was founded in 1992 by Mike Parsons after discovering from his own personal experience just how difficult it was to find a good quality care home for two relatives in need of nursing care. With aims to create a better alternative, he bought Moreton Hill, a 17th century farm that he converted into a unique care home. 25 years on, Barchester is one of the top care providers in the UK, caring for over 10,000 residents across the country.

Here's to another great 25 years of getting it right! Happy Birthday Barchester.

A colourful afternoon!

A colourful afternoon!

Alice Snares and Ursula Wingrove hardly noticed who was watching as they busily set about colouring pictures at Woodland View Care Home. Both ladies were so relaxed, clearly enjoying the time together and the task at hand.

Carers encouraged and assisted in the afternoon activity, just before a very rewarding tea trolley arrived. Yes, there was cake. Yes, they may have had more than one piece - but who's counting!
