Activities at Woodland View Care Home

Activities at Woodland View

Woodland View is passionately committed to providing residents with a varied choice of entertainment, social, health and well being, craft and relaxation based activities.

Activities will all be meaningful and based on the likes of residents and will continue to evolve depending on our residents. The activities provided will also include involvement from other local community based organisations and are open to all residents, family and friends of residents. Our activities will be facilitated by staff from all departments as well as invited guests. Families are also enthusiastically encouraged to play a part in activities when possible.

There will always be at least one person at every activity who has been DBS checked to ensure the safeguarding of our residents. The dignity of our residents and our respect for them is at the centre of everything we do, each and every day.

We are always reviewing and changing our schedule of activities to be a centre of excellence and actively invite feedback and suggestions for new and meaningful activities and ideas.

Petra Hardman

Activities Coordinator

Hi my name is Petra and I'm the Activities Coordinator here at Woodland View. I love seeing the difference that activities can make to each individual, and finding out what interests they have and ensure I incorporate that into our activities here.

I love music and drama coming from a musical background as a singer all over the country, music is important to me and I feel it makes such a difference to everyone, it evokes memories, and creates happiness. I also love to boost residents self esteem by creating pampering sessions and having one to one time to relax and reminisce.

General Manager, Juliet Driver, just can't say no to a dance when the opportunity arises!

New respite resident, Tony Coot - a former dance teacher - heard a visiting singer in full flow and took Juliet for spin, covering the coffee lounge floor.

The Woodland View weekly activities programme regularly features music-based events, including musicians, singers, sing-a-longs and musical movies, offering something tuneful for everyone.

Dedham Community Farm have some gorgeous new arrivals and Woodland View residents just couldn't wait to meet them.

The farm provides animal therapy for a range of organisations in the Colchester area as part of occupational therapy, and Woodland View have a regular slot booked for residents, so that they can interact with the animals.

There was a veritable rush by those on the most recent trip to get their hands on one of the six soft and fluffy Border Collie puppies. Before long, the puppies were pretty worn out and were lying on top of each other, fast asleep.

Dementia Friends

Dementia Friends

Woodland View embraced Dementia Awareness Week by hosting two 'Dementia Friends' talks. The Alzheimer's Society set up the 'Dementia Friends' initiative to promote dementia friendly communities. Volunteers who deliver 'Dementia Friends' sessions help others learn about dementia so they can gain a better understanding of some of the issues and what it is like living with the condition.

The first 'Dementia Friends' session held at Woodland View was aimed at residents already living at the care home. They would already be aware of others in the home living with dementia and might benefit from a better understanding of how the condition can have an impact on behaviour and emotion.

The second session was opened up to relatives of residents and advertised to people in the local community. It featured a couple of interactive activities to highlight and demonstrate what it's like trying to cope with dementia on a day by day basis for both the person living with the condition and those who care for them. People attending were very grateful for the eye-opening information and stated that it would genuinely help their approach to communication and care with their loved ones who have dementia.

The Bear Necessities

The Bear Necessities

It's another bank holiday and, for most, another day of rest. However, this is Woodland View and we don't rest any more than necessary!

Along with the craft workshop and Gentleman's Club, residents were again delighted in the morning by a visit from a little chap called 'Bear'.

Bear is Woodland View's PAT dog, and stops by once a week, calling in to the coffee lounge and doing one-to-one visits in residents' rooms. Sporting his very smart blue dickie-bow and photo-ID badge, Bear is a welcome sight to all the dog lovers in the home and photo opportunities are a regular feature.

Bear is a 15 month old Pug/Chihuahua mix, and belongs to his keeper, Leah O'Kane. He thoroughly enjoys the attention he gets from his human fans and he's more than happy to have a quick doze on someone's lap.

Cake Baking

Cake Baking

We all know that there's nothing nicer than having a cake and a cuppa. Residents at Woodland View had some sweet, sticky fun decorating cakes and then - surpisingly - eating them!

Icing, buttercream, chocolate buttons, marshmallows, cherries, sprinkles, jelly babies - it wasn't too difficult to find a topping that raised a smile of anticipation on every residents' face.
