Activities at Ashcombe House Care Home
Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.
Michelle Martin
I’m a fun, loud and outgoing individual who loves organising fun activities for residents at Ashcombe House (and staff, if possible). I’m very creative and keep the residents very active, both mentally and physically In my spare time, I love doing a lot of fundraising, which usually ends up with me sliding in mud.

Life at Ashcombe House Care Home
World Chocolate Day
What could be better than having an entire day dedicated to chocolate? Staff and residents enjoyed taking part in a 'name that chocolate bar picture' quiz. Head Chef, Vicky, had made her own chocolates and we had an amazing afternoon taste testing and identifying the flavours of all the chocolates.
Birds of Prey
Residents enjoyed a visit from Wings of Freedom, a bird of prey rescue centre. They were introduced to Rocky the Bran owl, Dumpy the one eyed Tawny and an Eagle named Norman. Residents asked questions and were able to stroke the birds and find out how they came to be rescued. Animal therapy is an important part of life at Ashcombe and we try to arrange visits with animals as often as we can.
Vegetarian Cook-Off
Residents were treated to an interactive virtual cookery demo, courtesy of chef, Alex Connell, from Vegetarian for Life.
Chef Alex whipped up some tasty, healthy vegetarian snacks in a live, interactive cookery demo. Head Chef, Mark, had prepared the same recipes so that residents could try all the dishes.
Residents sampled delicious, light and summery veggie dishes including Borlotti bean and dill pate, Greek fritters with Tzatziki and Coronation 'chicken' pastries. All finished off with a sweet and simple but totally yummy banana bread. Some enjoyed the tasting more than others!
Dreams Come True
Residents heard of a local 4 year old, Oliver, who has 2 types of spina bifida and other ailments. All Oliver wanted was a red trike to be like his peers. The specialist trike would cost over £2000, so Oliver’s family started fundraising.
Residents were delighted with the Barchester Foundation to give Oliver a huge cheque for £600 to complete his fundraising and order his trike. Oliver came and met residents and has promised to return on his trike.
Thank You Nurses & Carers
Celebrations were held to say a huge thank you to all our nursing staff and team of carers. This last year has been a difficult one for everyone and our nurses and carers have gone above and beyond to keep our residents and staff safe and well.
Nurses were presented with certificates, chocolates and personalised mugs as a small token of thanks. Carers enjoyed chocolates and speciality lunches in the home's garden as a small way to say thanks
Century Celebrations
Resident, Rita, celebrated her 100th birthday with us with a vintage themed garden party. Usually, we host a champagne reception, but all the birthday girl wanted was a nice Guinness!
Head Chef, Vicky, created a wonderful birthday cake and provided afternoon tea in the garden, which really made for a wonderful day.
A special delivery from Buckingham Palace gave Rita her 100th birthday card from HRH Queen Elizabeth II.
