Activities at The Dales Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Kay Thompson

Activities Coordinator

Hi, my name is Kay and I am the activities coordinator here at the Dales.  I joined the team in June 2021 and I love spending time with the residents each day, delivering meaningful activities that keep our residents active and social stimulated, more importantly we have fun!  Our life enrichment programme is varied and we have lots to do!

Before I joined the home I was a lecturer teaching young individuals with high needs, it is very different being an activities coordinator but it does help with understand how to ensure everyone is happy each and every day in everything that we do.

I look forward to meeting you when you visit our home.

Life at The Dales Care Home

Anniversary of the Moon Landing

53 years ago on 21st July 1969, NASA spacecraft Apollo 11 landing on the moon. To celebrate the anniversary, here at The Dales we did a bit of work creating our own rocket sand art bottles. Residents and staff loved the beautiful colours of the sand and were very happy to finish with a lovely cup of tea and tasty homemade chocolate cookies.

Dog Art

A lovely bit of art work/ We had a talk about animals and decided to do some lovely dog colouring. We couldn’t decide on our favourite dog so did a perfect mix of colouring different breeds.

Anyone for tennis?

Residents and staff at The Dales care home in Skipton were at the ready for the start of Wimbledon on June 27th with a little tennis warm up game, followed with delicious strawberries and cream and all washed down with a glass of Pimms.

Tennis fans at The Dales were delighted to be able to watch this year’s 135th Championships after the disappointment of last year’s tournament having to be cancelled.  Residents and staff got together to watch the matches and celebrated by having afternoon tea whipped up by head chef Patrick Bonus with traditional Wimbledon-inspired strawberry and cream treats.

Roisin Doyle, General Manager at the home, said: “We’ve had a fantastic time celebrating the return of Wimbledon today, it is always a firm favourite with our residents. We really missed the tournament last year so we’re planning on watching as much as we possibly can this year and enjoying every minute!”

Opera performance

Our homes had a fabulous time with the talented soprano Astrid Joos from Street Theatre.  Astrid spoke about a selection of famous operas and our residents were treated to performances of wonderful arias from operas well-known to all, such as ‘Giuditta’, ‘Don Giovanni’ and ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’.

It was a lovely experience, truly enjoyed by all.

Heart Art

A bit of creative art work. Using a mixture of simple materials such as card and paper we created some loving heart hanging decorations. It’s like every day is Valentine’s Day – the day of love.

Dr Tim Howard discusses book

Residents across our homes had a lovely time joining Dr Tim Howard, 4th generation GP, whose whole life has been about patient care, for an exciting virtual event to discuss his novel ‘Let’s Kill All The Lawyers’.

The novel is a medical fiction thriller that explores the impact of life and death events, mistakes and forgiveness, and the impact of law and justice on the day- to-day lives of ordinary people doing their best in difficult circumstances.

Residents had the chance to ask their own questions once the discussion was over and a great time was had by all.
