Activities at Dudwell St Mary Care Home

Our activity coordinator provides our home with a fun-packed weekly programme to engage all residents. Past activities include bread making, pottery, knitting, and card making. Not only do we run regular exercise programmes for the residents but we also have our regular entertainers come in to entertain our residents and their families. The activity coordinator visits residents on a one-to-one basis, for a chat, manicure and hand massage. The activity co-ordinator said "Residents love the one-to-ones and especially enjoy the manicure and hand massage, as not only is it stimulating but it boosts their confidence and pride in their appearance.''

Linda Lawes

Activities Coordinator

My Name is Linda and I am one of the Activities Co-ordinators at Dudwell St. Mary care home.

I joined Dudwell St Mary in April 2008 as a Housekeeping Assistant and later became the Head of Housekeeping.  In 2018 I then became an activities co-ordinator where I brought lots of new exciting ideas to the role.

I am passionate about my role within the home and aim to bring a smile to all our residents’ faces through different types of activities. My personality is bright and bubbly so aim to share this each day at work.

Life at Dudwell St Mary Care Home

Lovely day for a bit of potting!

A lovely sunny day so we were back out in the garden planting a few more pots and baskets.

ANYONE FOR TENNIS?

Residents and staff at Dudwell St Mary care home in Burwash were ready for the start of the Wimbledon semi-finals on July 13th with delicious strawberries and cream, all washed down with a glass of Pimms.

Tennis fans at Dudwell St Mary were delighted to be able to watch this year’s 136th Championships. Residents and staff got together to watch the matches and celebrated by having afternoon tea whipped up by head chef Rob with traditional Wimbledon-inspired strawberry and cream treats.

Robert Dura-May, General Manager at the home, said: “We’ve had a fantastic time celebrating the return of Wimbledon today, it is always a firm favourite with our residents. We’re planning on watching as much as we possibly can this year and enjoying every minute!”

A resident, commented: “I absolutely love watching Wimbledon, it is definitely my favourite sporting fixture.  It was lovely to celebrate its return with all my friends here and to enjoy all the delicious party food.”

WORLD CHOCOLATE DAY – DOES IT GET ANY BETTER?

Staff and residents had a fantastic time celebrating World Chocolate Day, surely one of the best days of the year!

Overseen by the chef, staff and residents whipped up a selection of different chocolate treats from chocolate logs to cupcakes, chocolate fudge cake and even a Mississippi mud pie.

Senior General Manager, Robert Dura-May, said: “It wasn’t just the residents that were excited when we found out there was a World Chocolate Day, the eyes of all our staff lit up too.  We all had great fun discussing our favourite types of chocolate down the years, it’s amazing how many different chocolate bars and flavours there have been!”

A resident said: “I have always loved anything to do with chocolate, I don’t think there are many people that don’t!  I have eaten so much delicious chocolate today, I think this has to be one of my favourite celebrations.”

Visit from the Animal Sanctuary

Another great visit from the amazing Animal Sanctuary. The residents got to handle and cuddle a variety of animals. The residents always ask lots of questions regarding the animals including what they eat and where they sleep.

RESIDENTS LEND THEIR EARS TO LIVE MUSIC PERFOMANCE

Residents and guests enjoyed a morning of grins with a live music performance that took place at the home. London based Carousel Theatre Company performed ‘Hooray for the holidays’ and sang a selection of classic hits including ‘We’re all going on a summer holiday’

Residents joined in with the singing, and clapped along as the band performed their finale song.

General Manager, Laurence Thurlow said, “Our residents and guests had a wonderful morning singing along with the wonderful performers. We do our best to provide a wide range of activities and entertainment at Dudwell St Mary as part of the lifestyle enrichment programme for residents, and this was one of our favourites!”

One resident said “I haven’t heard some of these songs in many years. The classics never go out of style!”

AND THEY’RE OFF… TO ENJOY ROYAL ASCOT!

Residents and staff at Dudwell St Mary care home in Burwash dressed to impress, donned their best hats, studied the form and had their bets at the ready for Royal Ascot, which ran from 20th – 24th June.

Residents and staff got together to watch the races, and also celebrated in true Royal Ascot fashion by having strawberries, a glass of pimms, and taking part in a sweepstake and dressing up in Royal Ascot fashions.

Laurence Thurlow, General Manager at the home, said: “We’ve had a fantastic time celebrating Royal Ascot, it is such a great event to watch and it is wonderful to see the crowds in all their finery.  We all had a little flutter between ourselves even though none of us has much of a clue about odds or form!”

A resident at the home, commented: “I love Royal Ascot and seeing the Royals, the amazing hats and all the fantastic outfits.  I haven’t got a clue about horse racing, I just choose the colours I like best!
