Activities at Falmouth Court Care Home

We took some of our residents to see the legendary Tall Ships at Events Square today

We had a fantastic time reminiscing our own sailing journeys and managed to meet some crew members of the tall ships who told us all about their voyages

We enjoyed a cold drink in Events Square listening to the entertainment and soaking up the atmosphere in the sunshine

So to celebrate International Beer Day we held a classic pub quiz for our residents their families and our local community. With several teams and a full lounge, Bob our Head of Maintenance was quiz master giving everyone 5 rounds of questions ranging from General Knowledge to music and much more.

Hugh our Home Services Advisor stocked up on all the pub classic bar snacks and plenty of drinks for the occasion.

Everyone was in high spirits with all to play for as the winning team taking home a lovely Regency Hamper.

BT Companions!

This week the team from the BT Truro call centre came along to meet out residents. The team provide a befriending service to our residents via the telephone. Each week one of the team gives the home a call on a mobile they have provided and spends half an hour chatting with one of our residents.

We have been trialing the scheme for a few weeks and it was really lovely for both our residents and the group to meet in person to build those links further.

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

To celebrate World Friendship Day our residents decided to make friendship bracelets for their loved ones. Our activities team sourced lots of bright coloured beads and everyone spent the afternoon making bracelets to their individual taste.

World Friendship Day, also known as International Day of Friendship takes place on 30th July.

The original idea for a day of friendship came from Hallmark cards in the 1930’s. Originally celebrated on 2nd August, the day was largely viewed cynically by the public as a money making exercise, sales of friendship day cards did not take off in Europe and by the mid-1940’s the day had faded into obscurity in the USA. The idea of a day to honour friendship was, however, adopted by a number of countries in Asia where it remained a popular custom to reserve a day for celebrating friendships and the exchange of gifts between friends.

The first World Friendship Day was proposed for 30 July 1958 by the World Friendship Crusade, an international civil organisation that campaigns to foster a culture of peace through friendship. Many years later, in 2011, the 30th July was declared as the International Day of Friendship by the General Assembly of United Nations.

With the growing popularity of social media throughout the world, there has been an increase in celebrating World Friendship day and International Day of Friendship online as well as with community activities in local communities aimed at bringing those of different backgrounds together.

Some more updates from our very happy Gardening Club here at Falmouth Court.

Our residents have been nurturing cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet peas and many other plants and flowers. The fruits of their labour being used by our talented chefs.

With many trips taking place to local garden centres to add more and more floral displays each week.

We are incredibly grateful to our dedicated Gardening Club members for their hard work and passion. Their love for gardening is really making our outside spaces beautiful.
