Activities at Hugh Myddelton House Care Home

Nursing and care staff at Hugh Myddelton care home were recently overjoyed to receive ‘Soap and Glory’ gifts from their local Boots store in Edmonton. The kind gesture was a wonderful surprise, and a great boost for the hard working staff.

Kajal Desai, Store Manager at Boots Edmonton Green said: “We know you and your team have been working incredibly hard, providing the highest level of care for your residents, that’s why we wanted to give everyone a massive thank you from us”.

Carla Sanders, General Manager at Hugh Myddelton Care Home said: “We are all truly thankful and feel very humbled to receive support like this from the local community. The team work tirelessly, continuing to ensure residents are happy, engaged and connected, which is more important than ever. We hope that these new friendships will continue beyond the current situation, and we just want to say a huge thank you!”

For some residents at Hugh Myddelton House care centre, the long awaited reunion with family and friends became a reality recently, as garden visits have now been allowed to commence at the home.

There has been much careful planning and preparation for this moment behind the scenes at Barchester Healthcare, who run Hugh Myddelton House care centre. Social distancing was still in place, and homes that are able to take part must have a large accessible garden.

It was welcome news to so many residents, family, and friends, who were kept apart for so long following strict government guidance. Residents and their loved ones got together in the home garden with the garden fully of joy and chatter.

Carla Sanders, General Manager at the home, said: “This has been a much welcomed development in what have been very strange times. The visits are safe and organised, and it was wonderful to see how happy it made the residents. We will of course endeavour to keep up the high standards of care, and continue with our ever evolving life enrichment programme, to keep residents engaged. But this was a lovely day.”

Mandy and her son were the first garden visitors, overjoyed to see her father face to face she said: “Thank you to all your wonderful staff for making for making it possible to see my dad after a long time apart, we felt very safe. My dad looked well and was so heart-warming to see him being so well cared for, you should all be very proud of what you have achieved during these challenging times”.

Residents at Hugh Myddelton House in Southgate enjoyed an afternoon party with beautiful cakes in celebration of Father’s Day.

This year, due to the current situation, family and friends joined in the celebrations virtually via video call. Residents weren’t phased by this however, as they have become quite tech savvy at Skype calls, FaceTime, and online events. These platforms are an invaluable way to keep people connected with loved ones and friends, as well as with the local communities, during these unprecedented times.

With cards and small gifts for residents in addition to those from their families it was a real party atmosphere on a beautiful sunny afternoon.

Carla Sanders, General Manager of the home, said: “We’ve all had a wonderful day today, and involving the families of our residents makes Father’s Day even more special. Using safe and effective communication, like video calling, allows our residents to stay in touch with family and friends. It’s important that we all feel connected right now, and we are continually adapting, and finding new ways to make sure every effort is focused on creating an enjoyable environment for all of our residents, whilst adhering to social distancing advice.”

You better beer-lieve that residents at Hugh Myddelton care centre in Southgate, were more than hoppy to raise a glass, and sample some top ales, in celebration of National Beer Day.

Beer lovers at the home celebrated, and spread beery joy by joining the national toast at 7pm on June 15th, along with millions of people across the country to say ‘Cheers to Beer’. The activity team at Hugh Myddelton House brought in a range of brew-tiful British ales for residents to sample, after a game of indoor skittles players all had built up quite a thirst and were awarded medals and certificates plus celebratory drinks!

On Saturday June 13th, the Queen celebrated her second, and official birthday. But there was an extra incentive to join in the festivities at Hugh Myddelton House care home in Southgate, as residents were asked to design a birthday cake in honour of Her Majesty’s birthday.

The winning cake design was then whipped into reality by the residents and baked by the homes’ chef, and finally enjoyed by residents and staff on the Queen’s special day.

Residents were also treated to a special birthday afternoon tea, prepared by the hospitality team. The Queen’s birthday was marked with a small celebration at Windsor Castle, where the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are staying in isolation.

Last Friday we celebrated International Biscuits Day with a lovely tasting, decoration and reminiscing session. Residents were very happy tasting different types of biscuits, including delicious homemade biscuits just taken out of the oven and brought for the session by our Chef. Everyone really enjoyed decorating with all the coloured icings and chatting about their favourite ones from the childhood.
