Activities at Kernow House Care Home
Our Activities Coordinators organise varied and regular events. The activities that take place depend on what our residents tell us they are interested in and the feedback we get from their families. We currently have pop-up cafes where we socialise and maybe visit the hairdresser. We have regular live music events, a storyteller and visits from animals and we are often joined by families or friends during our social activities where they are always most welcome.
Living in Cornwall the surrounding countryside offers many beauty spots and we often have trips out to wherever our residents would like to go. At other times a walk to nearby shops or cafes is what we enjoy.
Louise is our hairdresser and she is with us twice a week. Louise also supports us during our weekly Namaste sessions where she offers hand massages in a relaxing environment. Every Thursday afternoon we have a time of worship supported by our local community. Our ice cream van, Kernow Kones, and our mobile pub, Kernow Keg, also make a weekly appearance. We have monthly clubs, when we play bingo or watch a film in our pop-up cinema. Residents on all units are invited to take part in a monthly Resident’s Meeting and they tell us what they would like.
Apart from these regular events, we also celebrate special occasions and often have musical entertainers to visit but we also make our own fun. All staff take part in fancy dress or charity events that we support and often what we do evolves through interaction between residents and care or activity staff. All this makes Kernow House a vibrant place to be where things happen both as group activities as well as on an individual level.

Life at Kernow House Care Home
Community event
We are taking part in Launceston Carnival Scarecrow Competition. Last year, we made a scarecrow that looked so realistic, members of the public phoned us to say someone was sitting by the road. This year, we have made a great effort to make a scarecrow, that actually looks like a scarecrow. Tony, our gardener, made a frame for us and we built the scarecrow the old-fashioned way, so his arms are sticking out. There was straw everywhere and the housekeeping team were worried about the mess but we had a lot of fun. Everyone agreed, that making a scarecrow is really hard work. We have named him Kernow Kasanova because we think he looks quite dashing.
Ice cream van visit
Earlier in the year we took part in a competition to make an Ice Cream Sundae and we won a fantastic prize from Lakeland for creating a very special ‘Lavender Blue Dilly Dilly’ sundae. Annie’s Whippy Van came to Kernow House on a beautiful sunny afternoon and everyone visited the ice-cream van and chose what they wanted. Annie was very generous - all residents and staff were given an ice-cream with sauce, sprinkles and flakes of their choice. Delicious!
National Read a Book Day
National ‘Read A Book Day’ is celebrated annually to encourage everyone to pick up a book and immerse themselves in the joys of reading. Whether an avid reader or someone who hasn’t picked up a book in a while, this day offers the perfect opportunity to dive into a new story, explore a different genre, or revisit an old favourite. We tried to live the summery theme with a summer poems book; some residents recognised traditional authors and there were a few new ones to enjoy that evoked the fun of going to the beach. We often read and share poems with residents, when we spend some individual time together. It often brings a lot of joy.
Community Choirs
Launceston Male Voice Choir visited us to sing summer songs and we were able to join in with them. Later on residents and staff enjoyed listening to, and singing along with Encore Singing Group who entertained us with some of the older popular well-known tunes. Both groups are from our local community and visit us during the year. Being able to work with people in our community is great and we appreciate the visits hugely. Thank you for paying us a visit and we look forward to having you back later in the year.
Drums for fun
We had a great afternoon with Drums4Fun when Graham came with his percussion workshop. There was drumming, shaking of jingle bells and maracas as well as lots of singing and dancing. It is just possible, that we have the best band in the whole world here at Kernow, if enthusiasm and effort is what makes a great band. One visitor commented that it was just like New Year’s Eve when everyone joined in ‘We Will rock you’. Great fun.
Trip Out
On a wet misty afternoon we took a trip to Jamaica Inn to visit the Daphne Du Maurier Museum and the Smugglers Museum. We often go out on trips and this time we had an outing to a place of historic interest. We have read extracts from Daphne Du Maurier’s book ‘Jamaica Inn’ so we decided to go to the famous inn. Not everywhere is accessible for wheelchair users and especially not when the building is over 300 years old so a couple of volunteers came for a trip to find out if this is somewhere we can go again. It was a great success. After exploring the museums, we drove around Colliford lake to get a real feeling of the moor and we saw some wonderful views. We will definitely return again and make more outings to this historical inn.
