Activities at Mortain Place Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Alex Leftley

Activities Coordinator

I was working in the print trade when a friend of mine became very unwell and I had to find a nursing home for her. Due to the dedication of the staff, my friend had another 18 months and I was able to take her out after being house bound for many years.

I felt that I wanted to do a job that made a difference and became a carer. I went back to school and redone my GCSE,s and then went onto do my level 3 diploma and am always enhancing my skills and knowledge. I came to Mortain Place as a senior carer on Normandy Gardens and worked my way up to Community Lead. I have chosen to move to the activities team to help support the life enrichment programme and help improve the life experience’s of our residents.

Mortain Place takes to the tracks

Some of our residents hopped into Go-Kart’s and took to the tracks at Knockhatch Adventure Park last week. Driving in pairs (one resident, one care assistant) they raced multiple laps around the circular track, grinning and waving at guests of the park.

Knockhatch supported the home with extra staffing to allow the best experience possible.

Our residents reminisced about using pedal cars in their youth, compared to motorised ones now and enjoyed racing each other, although no one could keep score.

Alex Leftley, lead activities coordinator said “It is great to be able to work with the local community to be able to provide the best experiences possible for our residents. We like to think outside the box and ditch the stigma of what people think a typical care home looks like. I am proud of the job I get to do.”

Mortain Mini Break

Our residents are over the moon because we made their dreams come true.

Michael, Doris, Jen & Bernard, along with 4 kind carer's hopped onto the ferry last week and went to the Isle of Wight.

They got up to all sorts of activities, such as lunching with monks, visiting the pigs, went to Quarr Abbey, the busy bee garden centre plus much more.

Michael wanted to visit his sister, Fiona, who he hadn't seen in 15 years, and Doris used to holiday on the Isle with her late husband Ted.

The staff and residents have come away feeling closer and have made some very special memories which have only been possible by the support of everyone involved.

Come on Brighton!

Jo wished to go and see Brighton & Hove Albion FC and was kindly donated tickets from a member of staff at Caffyns Audi, Eastbourne.

General manager Katie Brewster, along with her husband Raymond, picked Jo up Sunday afternoon and took him to the Amex Stadium and as luck would have it, they won 3-1!

A fantastic afternoon out and much fun had!

Meerkat Magic

Iris made a wish on our wishing tree... Her wish was to go and see some animals...

Our staff at Mortain Place really get to know our residents and know they how much Iris love animals, so they set to work.

Knockhatch Adventure Park was called and they really did go above and beyond. They kindly set up a one 2 one guide, Mark, who gave her a tour. They went to see the owls and lemurs plus Carolyn and Mark had set up a little surprise, and little did she know, Iris was to go and sit with the Meerkats and give them their breakfast- this is a memory that will never be forgotten.

Mortain Place would like to say a BIG thank you to Carolyn, Chris and Mark at Knockhatch Adventure Park, we look forward to building our relationship in the near future.

Making dreams come true

Here at Mortain Place we are dedicated to person centred care, our staff try to ensure not only is every day different but that the residents hobbies and interests are continued.

Our resident Susan has ridden and owned horses all over the world however in recent years this has become difficult for her to get to be near them,

We have been able to take Susan to some local stables and also managed to get a horse to visit her at Mortain Place.

A big Thank you to Polegate Equestrian Centre in helping us achieve this amazing goal and thank you to Susan's family, who were able to be here on the day and support Susan as well as making some very special memories! A lovely day had by all.

Making Friends in our Community

Who said when you move into a care home you don't make new friends? Here at Mortain we embrace it! Meeting like minded people in and out of our home is really important to us. We always have regular visits from everyone. Young and old we ensure you will always find a friend to chat to.
