Activities at Newlands Care Home

Activities within our home are tailored around the requests of residents. Our Activities Coordinator holds regular activity meetings to seek new thoughts and ideas. The home is committed to offering a varied range of activities for all residents, from hand and nail care to gardening for those who have green fingers. We carry out reminiscence activities, including planned entertainment days, bringing the seaside into the home or dance hall meetings.

We hold strong links with the community, especially schools and local children's sports teams, who visit the home to provide entertainment and engagement with residents. We also maintain relationships with the church to ensure that residents’ spiritual beliefs are met. Externally, we have our own minibus, and outings are planned and carried out, again tailored to residents’ preferences, whether it be shopping, visits to the local pub, tea and coffee afternoons, or a scenic day out in the lakes and lovely countryside that surrounds us. However, the fun does not stop at the residents we care for, but we also hold events to involve family and the wider community.

Life at Newlands Care Home

Newlands 'nail salon'

Many of our residents love nothing more than a good pamper! We set up a weekly “Nail Salon” to allow individuals to experience a treatment as if they had visited the salon. We cut, shape and file nails before having a lovely hand massage with a choice of moisturiser. Residents then get to choose their desired nail polish colour and can sit back and relax.

Residents go apple picking

Residents at Newland care home recently visited their local orchard to pick apples for their very own apple-themed beverages.

Residents were led by the care and activities team at the home to the orchard where they picked their own fresh apples.

General Manger Kim Whelan at Newlands care home, said: “One of our favourite days in autumn is apple picking in our local orchard, not only do the residents get a lovely day out but it is so much fun”

International Dot Day

September 15th was International Dot Day - a day when people of all ages are encouraged to engage in activities to harness their creativity.

Residents made their mark by completing "Join The Dots" and creating their own dot art using paint, pencils, buttons and other art mediums. Everyone enjoyed talking about their creations and where their inspiration came from.

Residents show their creative sides

During these unprecedented times, residents are missing their families more than ever. Residents got together to make some homemade photo frames to decorate and give to their families. Residents enjoyed decorating their frame and adding their photo for their families to see. Everyone enjoyed the session, talking about their families, reminiscing about their wedding days and enjoying a nice hot cup of tea with some tasty homemade biscuits from the kitchen!

Residents take to the virtual skies

Residents take to the virtual skies in an armchair travel down under. Residents enjoyed a Virtual trip to Australia where they enjoyed watching a tour of tourist hot-spots in Australia, a Virtual tour of the Australian Museum in Sydney and some aboriginal didgeridoo playing. Residents finished off their travel with some tasty Australian treats and refreshments.

Residents thoroughly enjoyed the session and are already discussing where their Armchairs will take them next…Greece? France? Or maybe even Italy!
