Activities at Queens Manor Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Shannon Cullen

Senior Head of Lifestyle

Hi, my name is Shannon and I am Head of Lifestyle and Enrichment here at Queens Manor. I have come to Queens Manor with 6 years of experience in the planning, activities and events sector.

I ensure that myself and the team get to  know each resident's preferences so that we can deliver a person-centred programme of events and activities within the home -  Including activities that positively impact physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. I strongly believe that creating great moments and memories for our residents and embracing their individuality with tailor made activities is the way forward.

In an era of developing technologies, we are using new ways of reaching out to family and friends - though Zoom, Skype and Facebook Portal. We hope that our residents never feel alone or too far away from their loved ones this way.   Each day I like to ensure that our residents enjoy themselves in a calm, stimulating and fun environment, whilst creating bonds with each other and staff.

Our Krystle Carrington lookalike…

Queens Manor Resident, Geraldine enjoyed having her very long hair restyled by QM hairdresser Karen. Looking super glamourous and with comments of looking like Krystle Carrington from the 1980’s series ‘Dynasty’, Geraldine has quite the skip in her step!

Looking fabulous all in red, her nails were then painted to match the outfit. Geraldine loved her make over and relished such a gorgeous pamper day. This is something that every resident enjoys as part of the Queens Manor lifestyle programme.

It’s so rewarding to see residents enjoy these times and enabling them to get that feel good factor. Hairdresser Karen Dyer said: ‘It is so rewarding to style a residents hair & they love it – such a boost of confidence and they often tell me – “I feel 10 years younger”!’

‘My garden, a sense of achievement…’

Queens Manor Resident, Irene loves to sit out in the sunshine.  Green-fingered residents have spent time in the gardens to enjoy a spot of weeding which has inspired Irene to make her own garden area extra special.

With some plants and packets of seeds to put into her garden and a beautiful hanging basket from her son, Irene has completely transformed her garden.  She is so proud of what she has achieved and it has created a conversation spot when residents are out for a garden walk. Other residents are now actively doing their garden areas too and helping each other cut the grass and clean the communal areas.

It is so special to see residents taking responsibility for their new home space and feeling good about making it their own. Irene is really looking so well with a little garden tan after lots of time out in the sunshine. Now she can sit back with a glass of wine and admire all her efforts.

Our Lifestyle Coordinator, Gillian Rutherford said ‘The responsibility and pride Irene takes in her garden is really inspirational & has given her a new found spring in her step’

Keeping active – Residents tee off on Queens Manor Links!

The importance of keeping active is a high priority for Residents here at Queens Manor and lots of our residents have previously enjoyed golfing. Other residents haven’t tried it before and have been expressing an interest in trying something new. Residents Myra, Tom and Pamela soon got to work on a stretch of grass in the gardens and created our very own golf putting green!

Everyone’s really enjoying this fun and positive experience. It keeps us active in the fresh air and when followed by afternoon tea and cake, what could be better? To everyone’s delight, some of our lesser experienced golfers have also turned out to be highly skilled putters!

Our General Manager Sharon generously donated a putter and golf balls and whilst we’re maybe no Gleneagles, the new ‘Queens Manor Putting Links’ is a stunning little local course in its own league, where several hole in ones have already been achieved! Planning for a putting championship and trophy is now underway…

Charades in the Sunshine

We have such beautiful gardens here at Queens Manor so it’s wonderful when it’s warm and today we took advantage of a summery day and played charades in the sunshine.

Residents mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day

We joined together for the ‘Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2’ and two minute silence to say thank you to fellow veterans who were also friends and family.

Staff and residents also marked the day by collecting stories and sharing them over a British Tea Party. Our kitchen provided a delicious array of cakes and biscuits and staff read out the stories written by the residents. Everyone shared their own experiences, war stories, memories of VE days gone by and thoughts of those times.

Tears were shed as all sang together for their own moving rendition of the war time classic, ‘We’ll Meet Again’ by Vera Lynn.

Many of our residents have very clear memories of the Second World War and it is important for us to learn about and understand their experiences, this is why we organised a day where their stories could be shared. It was an emotional but happy and special day and it is a privilege to remember and also celebrate with them.
