Activities at Queens Manor Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Shannon Cullen

Senior Head of Lifestyle

Hi, my name is Shannon and I am Head of Lifestyle and Enrichment here at Queens Manor. I have come to Queens Manor with 6 years of experience in the planning, activities and events sector.

I ensure that myself and the team get to  know each resident's preferences so that we can deliver a person-centred programme of events and activities within the home -  Including activities that positively impact physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. I strongly believe that creating great moments and memories for our residents and embracing their individuality with tailor made activities is the way forward.

In an era of developing technologies, we are using new ways of reaching out to family and friends - though Zoom, Skype and Facebook Portal. We hope that our residents never feel alone or too far away from their loved ones this way.   Each day I like to ensure that our residents enjoy themselves in a calm, stimulating and fun environment, whilst creating bonds with each other and staff.

Life at Queens Manor Care Home

Summer Fair , Summer Fair , Summer Fair , Summer Fair

Summer Fair

Queens Manor held a first Summer Fair. The weather was fabulous. Delicious BBQ food and fantastic entertainment. Staff and residents had a bottle tombola, which proved to be a big hit.

The sponsored Beat the Goalie event went down great with lots of young budding footballers trying to win the 4 tickets to the Betfred hearts cup game. The hole day was a brilliant success, raised £950 for the residents' fund.

Queens Manor regularly hosts events and fundraisers, all the money made from these goes to the Queens Manors residents' fund. All residents then have a meeting to decide how they would like to spend this money, so far we are looking at a piano for the home and we will have a lot more to add to our list.

International Yoga Day

International Yoga Day

Queens Manor celebrated International Yoga Day with a visit from a fantastic yoga instructor. We learned breathing techniques and some gentle poses, and we also had the children from the local nursery come in to join us.

,

Zumba Gold

Our Lifestyle Enrichment Coordinator, Suzie, is a qualified Zumba Gold instructor, and residents love coming along to her latin-inspired classes. Some residents have now passed their level 1 Zumba course.

Time on Our Hands

Time on Our Hands

The pupil's council from Clermiston Primary School have been working with residents of Queens Manor to fill a time capsule.

We had so many things to go inside: our favourite books, maps of the area, photographs, the Clermiston school tie and letters addressed to our future selves.

We buried the capsule in the Queens Manor courtyard and it will be marked with a commemorative plaque to be unearthed in 2069, 50 years from now.

Acrobatics at Queens Manor

We had a unique opportunity at Queens Manor recently: to be part of an acrobatics performance. Residents love watching the duo perform some amazing tricks and routines, and were more than happy to try out some moves themselves.

It was really something unusual, and we can't wait for them to visit us again!

,

Going Green

We have been working with Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust to create and improve local green spaces across Edinburgh and Lothians—helping local people, wildlife, landscapes and heritage.

We recently made some beautiful bird boxes to have in the garden at Queens Manor, hopefully bringing some of Edinburgh’s wildlife to our grounds, especially when the weather gets warmer.
