Activities at Rivermead Care Home
We all know that keeping active is important. We have created a wonderful culture within the home and we work together to give residents the best possible experience. We are here to ensure that residents enjoy an environment that is both stimulating and socially active. We ensure the team knows each residents' preferences, so that we can deliver a person-centered programme of events and activities. Essential to our homely feel is the strong relationships of trust we build with residents and their families and friends. The home also has its very own minibus for our numerous outings for coffee and shopping, which residents love.
Nicola Bedford
Hi, My name is Nicola and I am the activity coordinator for Rivermead. I plan and deliver a range of interactive and stimulating activities throughout the week for all the residents.
We focus our planning through person centred care, meaning the activities we deliver are tailored to each of the residents individual choice and interests.
It’s a very rewarding job role to be in, seeing the residents enjoy their lives to the best of their abilities and enhancing their experiences, building and maintaining friendships and supporting their wellbeing.

Life at Rivermead Care Home
Somewhere over the rainbow!
Residents and colleagues at Rivermead have been busy painting the colours of the rainbow with their own take on the rainbow initiative with a piece of artwork created at the front entrance to encourage everyone to ‘keep smiling’.
The idea is that members of community display rainbows in their windows so that children can go ‘rainbow spotting’ when out for their exercise with family. The colourful displays are brightening up everyone’s day! The Facebook group has over 90,000 members and the home is delighted to be part of the community spirit.
Residents enjoy weekly coffee morning
Staff and residents at Rivermead came together to chat as they enjoyed their weekly coffee morning with home-made biscuits and refreshments. Everyone is looking forward to inviting their friends from the community back into the home again.
Linda Kirby, activities coordinators said: “Our Community Coffee Morning allows our residents to come together for a chat and enjoy each others company and we look forward to the time when our friends from the community are able to join us again. It’s a great chance to share stories, make new friends, and of course, enjoy our wonderful spread provided by our hospitality team! Stay safe until we meet again’
Bumper ‘egg’stravganza’ for Residents
Residents of Rivermead were delighted to receive a visit from the Easter bunny when they were surprised by the generosity of the local community who delivered treats for the Residents to enjoy. Colleagues were on hand to accept the beautiful gifts filled with a selection of eggs all shapes and sizes sure to satisfy any chocolate lover
Activities coordinator, Linda Kirby said: “As always, we were looking forward to Easter. It’s such a nice time of the year – the residents love all the colourful Easter eggs and made Easter extra special for our residents during this challenging period for everyone, It was an eggs-cellent day!”
Community gesture brings cheer to Rivermead
Team members and residents at Rivermead in Malton received a wonderful surprise from a local supermarket. Morrison’s in Malton turned up at the home with two large hampers for staff and a lovely note attached, which stated:
“We know the new government advice is to work from home. We also now you, like us are unable to do that. However, you are saving lives, not selling beans. Here is just a little something to say thank you for everything you are doing to keep us and our families safe. We appreciate everything you do. Keep smiling!”
The amazing community gesture brought lots of smiles to the home in this difficult time. Thank you Morrison’s!
Pupils help bridge the generation gap.
Residents of Rivermead recently welcomed local year 10 students as part of their Archbishop of York Youth Award Group project. The visit was to provide company for the residents which supports and improves both physical and mental health. The students achieved this was by playing card games, running quizzes, puppet show and offering craft activities.
The response from the residents and the students was very positive, with both sides making new friends. The home extend a warm invitation for the pupils to visit again, with one student describing the visit as “a very rewarding opportunity to communicate and interact with the older generation”
