Activities at South Chowdene Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Niki Powell

Activities Coordinator

I arrange meaningful activities for all of our residents based on their likes and interests. I love sharing fun times with our residents, their families and with staff. I thoroughly enjoy chatting with residents about their hobbies/interests as well as reminiscing in small groups.

Our activities extend beyond the home with trips to places of interest, places residents have enjoyed throughout their lives eg. Seaside, parks, garden centers, as well as craft/ art workshops at libraries and general interest talks around the area.

Life at South Chowdene Care Home

Dementia Action Week

This started with a visit from WAG promoting memories of dogs and pets in general with cuddles promoting relaxation and calm. Joanna, Rocco’s owner also chatted with residents about their animal experiences both in the lounge and around rooms.

The animal theme continued with Emma’s exotic animal encounters. Residents couldn’t believe the many breeds Emma brought in and waiting to see what was to come out of the next carrier was very exciting indeed (and to a certain extent, worrying!).

Residents found out all about each different animal and overcame some deep reservations about being near to and then holding them. There were some strange expressions on faces at times but staff, residents and visitors all had a wonderful time.

VE Day

Gilly came in for a good old ‘troops singalong’ with all the favourites from the 40’s. He had everyone singing, clapping, stomping and dancing surrounded by pictures from the VE Day celebrations in 1945. Lunch and tea were listed on a ‘Ration book menu’ and our fantastic chef Lynne got right into  the era with corned beef hotpot, lentil and vegetable soup, jam sponge and custard and mixed fruit and Carnation milk.

In the afternoon, residents found out about heroes of the war and were amazed to find out just how varied Churhill’s talents were encompassing Art, Literature and music as well as leading our country through the war. We also heard about Princess Elizabeth and her sister Margaret being allowed out for the evening and the Conga through the Ritz!

Celebrating Cadbury's

Residents across our services had a wonderful time joining Cadbury for an interactive virtual talk on their fascinating 200-year history.

Residents joining learnt interesting facts about the chocolate giant, shared memories, and reminisced about their favourite sweet treats.

It was a heartwarming experience filled with laughter, nostalgia, and plenty of chocolatey goodness!

Home have fun in PJs for charity

Staff and residents spent the day in their pyjamas in order to raise money for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Group. Staff arrived at work still in their pyjamas and residents enjoyed a relaxed day with lots of fun activities.

Niki Powell, Activity Coordinator at South Chowdene Care Home Care Home, said: “Taking part in this event has been a huge amount of fun and everyone at the home as well as visitors, have been behind us all the way. It’s for such an important cause. I’m very glad to be able to do my bit to raise further awareness and money for the charity.”

Celebrating our love of tea!

What a lovely and fun afternoon we had, learning about different types of tea, where they come from and how popular different teas are in various places.

We also learnt how different teas are made and how important tea ceremonies are in different cultures. The time spent preparing and pouring tea in some places is quite astounding as is the fact that people have to be properly trained in the art of pouring a cup of tea!

All that was thirsty work so we had a good old cup of tea with biscuits as we played ‘Tea bingo’.

St George's Day

It was all dragons and roses all round at South Chowdene Care Home care home, in Low Fell, as residents and staff celebrated St George’s Day.  Legend has it St George was a soldier in the Roman army who slayed a dragon and saved a princess, the anniversary of his death is celebrated as England’s national day.

In honour of the patron saint of England, staff and residents at the home marked the day with a St. George factfile followed by a quiz. Vidoes of Morris dancing were watched on You Tube and one of our favourite entertainers took us through many of our most loved English songs by English artists during the afternoon. Giving the celebrations a gourmet twist, Lynne our fantastic head chef at the home South Chowdene Care Home prepared traditional fish and chips.
