Activities at South Chowdene Care Home
Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Niki Powell
I arrange meaningful activities for all of our residents based on their likes and interests. I love sharing fun times with our residents, their families and with staff. I thoroughly enjoy chatting with residents about their hobbies/interests as well as reminiscing in small groups.
Our activities extend beyond the home with trips to places of interest, places residents have enjoyed throughout their lives eg. Seaside, parks, garden centers, as well as craft/ art workshops at libraries and general interest talks around the area.
Activities and Events Partnerships
As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies
Life at South Chowdene Care Home

Milk and 2 sugars
What a fantastic time our residents had with the ‘Woven Nest’ production of ‘Milk and 2 sugars’. Every resident met ‘Pip’ personally and were wowed by her circus skills. Some finally got to play the spoons and made great tunes. There were many old favourites to sing along to and it was incredibly heart warming to see residents getting fully immersed in all the action.

Some Mother's do Ave Em
Residents across our services had a fantastic time enjoying the virtual screening of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. Frank Spencer’s comical misadventures had everyone laughing and it was wonderful to see so many happy faces.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and a special thanks to The Barn Theatre in the Cotswolds for bringing this stage adaptation of the beloved sitcom to our screens.

Friendship Day
Residents’ friends and family came together for an Afternoon tea and chat about their friendships, memories and how we used to keep in touch.
There were a lot of stories about friendships made during the War which would never have happened otherwise and some residents who still had friends from when they were at Nursery. Some residents still send cards and letters to their friends and are very excited when a letter arrives for them in the post.
Our very own friend of South Chowdene Jane came to help the celebrations along and told us about her friendships and how she became friends with South Chowdene

Owl Day
What a literal hoot everybody had as Sarah and Stuart brought a white barn owl, screech owl and European Eagle owl in. Residents inside and outside as well in rooms, family, friends, staff and senior managers all took their chance to hold the owls and find out about their lives, characters and feeding and sleeping habits as well as how to keep them happy in the heat.
Some residents were proud to overcome initial fears around holding the Owls and many made friends with all three owls as they had a lot of one to one time with them and their keepers.
Many residents were just amazed at how friendly the owls were and that they were awake in the middle of the day!

Virtual trip to Cornish Seal Sanctuary
A big thank you to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary for the fantastic live virtual event today!
Residents across our services loved seeing the seals up close and learning about the incredible work the sanctuary does to protect them and other wildlife in Cornwall as well.
Everyone truly enjoyed the experience.

Home celebrates Emergency Services Day
Residents and staff at South Chowdene Care Home in Low Fell, honoured their local emergency services as members of Gateshead fire and rescue services came in to talk to us about fire safety in the home and how to defend against gas leaks.
Community members and family of residents also joined us to learn about what they can do to prevent emergencies.
September 9th is the UK’s Emergency Services Day, or 999 Day. The day gives people a chance to show their appreciation for the two million people serving communities in the emergency services either as employees or volunteers.
