Activities at South Chowdene Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Niki Powell

Activities Coordinator

I arrange meaningful activities for all of our residents based on their likes and interests. I love sharing fun times with our residents, their families and with staff. I thoroughly enjoy chatting with residents about their hobbies/interests as well as reminiscing in small groups.

Our activities extend beyond the home with trips to places of interest, places residents have enjoyed throughout their lives eg. Seaside, parks, garden centers, as well as craft/ art workshops at libraries and general interest talks around the area.

Life at South Chowdene Care Home

Easter cake competition entry

Here is the South Chowdene entry into the Easter Cake competition which we hope will flap its way to the top! Residents brought out their very best cake creating, making and icing skills and had a great time trying different designs then finding inspired ways to achieve the desired outcome.

Residents shared tips for cake designing, making and decorating as we went along and many stories were shared about both Easter baking and baking for specific events. Who knew we had so many prolific makers and bakers amongst us. Well done everyone.

Eva's 102-years young birthday!

Huge congratulations to Eva on reaching her 102nd year. Everyone enjoyed the celebrations, especially finding out some of the amazing, interesting and downright weird things which happened during the year of her birth. Eva’s family visited and enjoyed some family time over Afternoon Tea and the whole home enjoyed the fantastic birthday cake made by our talented chef Lynne.

Spring Fair

Staff, residents and community came together on Sunday 3rd March to celebrate the start of Spring with a fair. There were stalls selling items for Mothers’ Day and Easter, a raffle and tombola as well as live entertainment from Dave Brewis, Wag and Co had a charity stall and Teddy came in as a guest to meet everyone to both residents’ and visitors’ delight.

Red Nose at the ready!

Staff and residents at South Chowdene care home in Low Fell baked and decorated to put on a Bake Sale in order to raise money for Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day on March 15th.

Staff and residents at the home donned their red noses, wore red and got stuck in to help raise funds for this very important cause. We invited community members and groups and our new friendship dog, Rocco, came to meet us, joining in the excitement with his red bandana on to fully be part of the event.

London Ladies

As part of our International Women’s Day celebrations, Residents from across our services were thrilled to join tour guide, Mandy Morrow, for an exciting talk about some Legendary London Ladies.

Mandy shared the fascinating stories of eight ladies with us, from the one of the richest heiresses in the world to the original 'Roaring Girl'.

Everyone who participated truly enjoyed the experience and were delighted to take a walk down memory lane.

Home present cheque to charity

South Chowdene  recently presented Teams and Bensham Community Care with a cheque for £500 to help get their minibus back on the road.

The grant had been awarded by Barchester’s Charitable Foundation, a charity that helps older people and adults with a disability or mental health problems across England, Scotland and Wales by offering grants to help people connect or re-connect with others in their local community. The care home welcomed Christine and Michelle to a small gathering at the home’s regular Coffee Morning to receive the cheque and celebrate being awarded the grant.
