Activities at South Chowdene Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Niki Powell

Activities Coordinator

I arrange meaningful activities for all of our residents based on their likes and interests. I love sharing fun times with our residents, their families and with staff. I thoroughly enjoy chatting with residents about their hobbies/interests as well as reminiscing in small groups.

Our activities extend beyond the home with trips to places of interest, places residents have enjoyed throughout their lives eg. Seaside, parks, garden centers, as well as craft/ art workshops at libraries and general interest talks around the area.

Having fun with little friends

Hartbeeps were back with us at the end of 2022 to share some New Year joy between residents and the youngsters. It was evident to see how much our residents were enjoying having the children in and joining in nursery rhymes and games. The children in turn thought it was great to see some new faces and decided it was their job to make them laugh = win, win. We are looking forward to Hartbeep’s next visit!

Royal Parks London

Across our services our residents have enjoyed a wonderful live virtual talk about starlings, one of the UK’s most gregarious birds, hosted by Rachel Dowse from The Royal Parks London.

Rachel examined our long history with this bird and the importance of common species to our lives. Our residents had the opportunity to find out more about the great murmuration and why we need to pay special attention to these beauties before it's too late.

The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all.

Saints day cookery and traditions

Saint Andrew’s Day saw much Gaeilic merriment with our own Highland Games and a virtual look at the real thing as well as taking time to relax in the beautiful Scottish countryside. Lynne in the kitchen also made us some delicious Scotch Broth and one of our most favourite deserts – Cranachan.

Saint Lucia Day – the Scandanavian festival of light – saw us making biscuits again, this time cinnamon and pecan based and we followed the traditional Saint Lucia parade virtually and had a look at the main traditions on this day.

Saint Nicholas day saw residents greeted with the traditional gold coin on the breakfast tables and a delicious Goulash on the menu. After a virtual look at some of the St Nicholas processions, we tasted German Lebkuchen.

Getting Crafty for Christmas

Residents didn’t just design and make hats for our fundraising efforts for Brain Tumour Research over the festive preparations, they also made and decorated the South Chowdene Christmas cake competition entry and made cards for loved ones. All of these brought us some highly entertaining discussion with hilarious stories as well as great pride in finished results.

Intergenerational Celebrations

South Chowdene residents have very much enjoyed welcoming young people into the home to celebrate the season. Volunteers Grace, Ellen and Emilia came in to help with Christmas decorations with residents keeping them right as to where everything should go. We also invited Grace College students in to sing carols with us and to chat about Christmas traditions over the years.

A virtual trip to Donkey Sanctuary

Across our services, Residents enjoyed a fantastic virtual tour of the Donkey Sanctuary Manchester.  Residents were thrilled to meet the lovely herd of donkeys, including Henry and his best friend Tiny Tim and to learn more about their every day care.  They were introduced to the sanctuary’s work and the impact they make to the lives of donkeys in need worldwide.  The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all.
