Activities at South Chowdene Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Niki Powell

Activities Coordinator

I arrange meaningful activities for all of our residents based on their likes and interests. I love sharing fun times with our residents, their families and with staff. I thoroughly enjoy chatting with residents about their hobbies/interests as well as reminiscing in small groups.

Our activities extend beyond the home with trips to places of interest, places residents have enjoyed throughout their lives eg. Seaside, parks, garden centers, as well as craft/ art workshops at libraries and general interest talks around the area.

Life at South Chowdene Care Home

Carers week

As ever, residents at South Chowdene made sure that all our carers knew how much they are appreciated and they didn’t forget the other departments who help life run like clockwork in the home, making cards for each department and making a few goodies for each member of the team.

Posy making class

Our homes had a lovely time joining Sue and Nicole from Ferndown Florist for an intriguing flower arrangement workshop in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Our residents enjoyed a wonderful virtual demonstration and got inspired to create their own flower posies for our Jubilee displays.  Our home will be specially decorated for the upcoming festivities. Stay tuned.

Home hosts Spring Fair

Residents, their families and community friends had a great day at our Spring Fair. There were stalls, tombola, raffle and live entertainment from popular vocalist, Dave Brewis who performed a medley of hits which had everyone singing along too!  The highlight of the day was seeing Greta reunited with friends who she hadn’t been able to see for a very long time. Greta said ’It was a very happy day!’

Crystal Palace Chronicles

We had a lovely time joining Graham Whitlock for an exciting virtual event to discuss his book ‘The Crystal Palace Chronicles: Star of Nimrod’.

Our residents were thrilled to find out more about the book and the fictional character Joe, who went on a rollercoaster adventure travelling back in time to the heyday of Victorian Crystal Palace.

Everyone had lots of fun during the virtual talk, as Graham took them on a clever and hilarious adventure. A great time was had by all.

International Day of Families

Families are the foundation of society.  Now that we are able to visit each other freely again, it is more important than ever that families get to spend as much quality time together as possible.  Staff and residents here at South Chowdene spent International Day of Families celebrating their own families and thinking about the families of others.

International Day of Families takes place on 15th May.  It was established by the UN in 1993 to raise awareness of the issues faced by families across the world. International Day of Families highlights the important role than families play in communities and recognises the changes that family structures have undergone over the years, and are continuing to experience.

Residents and staff got involved by hosting a coffee morning where families chatted, shared memories and played games with each other.  There was a fabulous atmosphere throughout the day.

International Nurses Day

South Chowdene residents held an afternoon tea party for our hard working nurses and made cards to show their appreciation of the hard work the nurses do in the home.

We also remembered what Florence Nightingale did for the nursing world and subsequently for our health today. We also tested our own knowledge of the human body and medical facts with a quick fire quiz.
