Activities at South Chowdene Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Niki Powell

Activities Coordinator

I arrange meaningful activities for all of our residents based on their likes and interests. I love sharing fun times with our residents, their families and with staff. I thoroughly enjoy chatting with residents about their hobbies/interests as well as reminiscing in small groups.

Our activities extend beyond the home with trips to places of interest, places residents have enjoyed throughout their lives eg. Seaside, parks, garden centers, as well as craft/ art workshops at libraries and general interest talks around the area.

Life at South Chowdene Care Home

Residents enjoy a Virtual Cruise Experience

We had a lovely time joining Paul Hawkins and Lisa Richards from Unilever for an exciting Virtual Cruise experience.

Our residents were welcomed with mocktails as Lisa and Paul took them on a magical journey to 3 mystery destinations, which were uncovered after a few clues.

Paul demonstrated how to create a few of the local traditional dishes, which our residents had the opportunity to try too.

The event evoked lots of great memories and it was truly enjoyed by all.

Latte fun at South Chowdene

Staff and residents at South Chowdene Care Home in Low Fell held a charity coffee morning and bake sale in their garden on 24th September to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Having a coffee morning is the perfect chance to catch up over a cuppa and a slice of something delicious for a great cause. The money raised helps everyone with cancer to live life as fully as they can.

Residents enjoyed spending time with friends and relatives, and members of the local community.  Staff, family and friends of the home, had baked lots of lovely cakes, biscuits and pastries for everyone to sample and for guests to buy to take home.  Everyone was spoilt for choice!

Getting out and about

South Chowdene residents have been taking in some history, nature as well as fresh air on visits to the ‘Land of Oak and iron visitor centre’ over the last few weeks. We have been getting to know about the iron industry around Winlaton and Blaydon as well as making the most of the centre’s sensory garden before a lovely walk along the banks of the Derwent.

We have also revisited Chester Riverside Park to see how the duckling and cygnets were getting on and appreciated the arrival of new species complimenting the turn of the season.

Celebrating the Para-Olympics

During the Paralympic weeks, We put a medal on the ‘seasons’ tree for each one won with the name of the athlete or team on the back of the medal to represent our nation’s success in Japan.

Origami fun

We have been very fortunate once again to work with not just a craft expert but also an origame expert as well as a local primary school. Children put their little hands to colourful use making origami butterlies which were then sewn onto a frame to make us a butterly star filling the lounge with beautiful texture and colour.

Wine not? Residents join virtual tasting

We had a lovely time joining Hospitality Manager, Christophe Noel and special guests Lee Isaacs DipWSET and Nick Parker from Unity Wines and Spirits – as they introduced us to wine tasting techniques, the history of wine and wine making, as well as consumer attitudes.

Our residents had the opportunity to try a variety of wines from sparkling and white to rose and red, alongside a selection of delicious treats.

It was a wonderful experience, enjoyed by all.
