Activities at South Chowdene Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Niki Powell

Activities Coordinator

I arrange meaningful activities for all of our residents based on their likes and interests. I love sharing fun times with our residents, their families and with staff. I thoroughly enjoy chatting with residents about their hobbies/interests as well as reminiscing in small groups.

Our activities extend beyond the home with trips to places of interest, places residents have enjoyed throughout their lives eg. Seaside, parks, garden centers, as well as craft/ art workshops at libraries and general interest talks around the area.

Life at South Chowdene Care Home

Birthday celebrations

Annie has been visiting us for nearly 4 years and is a very valued team member. Residents love feeding her carrots (to keep her off their biscuits) and making a fuss of her. Recently, the tables have turned and we have been visiting Annie in her own home via Skype where she continues to soothe and entertain us. This year was her 10th birthday so we decided to send her a card and thought that a bag of carrots might be an unusual but useful gift. Annie has sent us lots of cards over the year which have kept us smiling and positive so we were glad that she enjoyed hers.

Bonfire celebrations

Well it wasn’t really night and we didn’t have a fire or fireworks but we did make a Parkin well in advance for the tea trolley on that day and instead of toasting marshmallows on the fire, they were dipped in the chocolate fountain. A few lovely family and spooky tales were told conjuring up memories of the smells, sights and temperature of bonfire nights past. We also remembered Bonfire fare at lunchtime with hot dogs and onions. Mmmmmmm!

Rosh Hashanah

Residents and staff at South Chowdene had a look at what Rosh Hashanah means to the Jewish community and how it is celebrated. We found out that Apples and Honey feature and so made a Honey Cake (which everyone enjoyed tasting) and used bottle tops to depict various fruits but mainly apples.

We had great fun trying different combinations and colours of tops in order to give us our favourite finish. We also experimented with using tops different ways up and down to create texture and realised that there is so much more to individual objects when you really look at them in order to depict them.

Pom-pom dance for Arts Day

This was a new venture for residents at South Chowdene. Instead of exercising generally, we picked 2 favourite songs and perfected dance routines to them using the lyrics as inspiration for movements and introducing Pom Poms to jazz things up. We had a great time and will be repeating the experience.

World Cruise Week

Over the week, residents at South Chowdene travelled to Spain, Turkey, India, Italy and Mexico. Each resident were given a passport in which they received a stamp each day and each morning they were issued with a boarding card for the upcoming city tour.

Pictures, maps and flags were displayed in the social areas according to country visited each day and virtual visits to main cities and places of interest took place finding out facts around the country and its culture. Food was sampled and cultural dance and games were tried (to varying degrees of success!).

Wear it Pink Day

Residents at South Chowdene donned their best pink outfits to raise funds for Breast Cancer research and found out quite a lot about progress made over the years and a few amazing facts in the ‘Pink Quiz’. After lunch we played ‘Pink games’ challenging residents mentally and physically. The main thing was that they we all laughing and smiling and giving challenges their full concentration.
