Activities at Spen Court Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Angela Blackburn

Head of Activities

My name is Angela and I am the Head Activities Coordinator here at Spen Court. I get so much satisfaction out of knowing I have made a difference to people’s days and have filled the home with a sense of community and happiness.

We feel it is important to build community connections and maintain our resident’s social interaction outside the care home.

We ensure we deliver a person-centered program of events and activities and build strong relationships with our residents, their families and friends.

Life at Spen Court Care Home

Heartfelt words

Residents and staff of Spen Court were delighted to receive and read a beautiful poem kindly written back, Ellie Bamford aged 9.  Ellie is the daughter of Deputy General Manager, Kirsty who has said many times how everyone is doing an amazing job, which from a 9-year old is most definitely a compliment!

The poem;  I love what you do, thanks for being you, I know it's been rough, thanks for being touch, You're the best, better than all the rest. Keep doing what you do, it's just you, being you. Without you... what would we do.

Halloween treats

At Spen Court we have been busy making decorations for the home, we decorated  the lounge area and made decorations to make a display.

As the children are no longer able to go around and do the trick or treating, we have made up some goody bags for the children of the team at Spen Court.

Resident receives special delivery

Resident, Doreen at Spen Court Care Home was delighted when she received a special delivery in the post.  The parcel was a hand drawn card from her great-grandchildren with some freshly baked scones.  Doreen was more than over joyed with the delivery and looked forward to tasting the gift with a nice cup of tea.

Garden family reunions

For some residents at Spen Court the long awaited reunion with family and friends became a reality recently, as garden visits have now been allowed to commence at the home.

There has been much careful planning and preparation for this moment behind the scenes at Barchester Healthcare, who run Spen Court care home. Social distancing was still in place, and homes that are able to take part must have a large accessible garden.

It was welcome news to so many residents, family, and friends, who were kept apart for so long following strict government guidance. Residents and their loved ones got together in the home garden and the garden was fully of joy and chatter.

Pen-pals bring smiles to Residents

Spen Court are delighted to receive letters from family, friends and members of the community through their pen-pal initiative.

Resident Kitty loves receiving and reading letters from one of their many new friends.  The letters, cards and pictures received always bring a smile to the faces of the residents.  The home started this initiative in March and it has been a great success.

Residents are able to reply to most of the mail that they receive, and there are some that are sent just to bring a smile to the residents faces and everyone looks forward to the juicy bundle each month!

A spot of fresh air!

The residents of Spen Court Care Home love spending time in the garden, enjoying the sunshine, without a care in the world.

Resident, Margaret and Activities coordinator, Angela made the most of the sunshine observing the beautiful colours of the plants and trees.

Margaret said “It was lovely to sit in the garden with the sun on her face
