Activities at Spen Court Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Angela Blackburn

Head of Activities

My name is Angela and I am the Head Activities Coordinator here at Spen Court. I get so much satisfaction out of knowing I have made a difference to people’s days and have filled the home with a sense of community and happiness.

We feel it is important to build community connections and maintain our resident’s social interaction outside the care home.

We ensure we deliver a person-centered program of events and activities and build strong relationships with our residents, their families and friends.

Life at Spen Court Care Home

Getting to know you

As we look at ways of keeping our residents, active and socially stimulated we have been busy ‘Getting to know’ each other and learning about their lives, families, interests, hobbies past and present to ensure that we include these meaningful activities in our life enrichment programme.

Little Helpers

Residents of Spen Court are encouraged to lend a helping hand if they wish.  Residents are often found lending a helping hand to the homes chef where they have enjoyed a lifelong interest and enjoyment in cooking.

For others, simple folding of napkins and participating in household chores to laying of the tables for lunch. One Resident says “this gives me a purpose, I feel like I’m contributing by lending a helping hand”.

Hoopla fun

Keeping active, having social interactions and being mentally stimulated is very important to Residents at Spen Court.   Today was a fun-filled game of hoopla!

Every got really competitive, everyone wanted to beat each other and Residents really got into the event.

Angela, activities coordinator said “Hoopla is good for Residents wellbeing as it helps with their hand eye coordination and is a good arm exercise to keep them muscles working.”

As part of the homes life enrichment programme, the activities coordinators include firm favourite’s in the homes calendar with fun-filled adapted games that they played over the years in a safe environment!

Home delighted to receive vaccine

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Spen Court care home, in Heckmondwike, were delighted to be invited to have the vaccination within the home, this service was provided by the Healds Road Surgery in Dewsbury, led by Dr Ghofoor and his team which has lifted everyone’s spirits after what has been a very challenging year for everyone.

General Manager, Sarah Sykes said: “Last year was a year like no other and the vaccine feels like the light at the end of the tunnel.  Our teams have been magnificent in how they have risen to every challenge during this pandemic and we are proud to play our part in this next phase to ensure the most vulnerable are protected.”

Keeping Residents connected during the colder months

Residents are overjoyed at Spen Court care home in Heckmondwike, as Barchester Healthcare has implemented a visiting suite for residents to continue to spend time with their loved ones for the autumn and winter seasons in addition to the outdoor visiting that has been on offer for those able for many months.

Balancing resident wellbeing and safety is at the forefront of Barchester Healthcare’s thinking and they understand how important it is for residents and their family and friends to be able to spend time together in the safest way possible.

There has been much careful planning and preparation for this moment by Barchester Healthcare, who run Spen Court care home. It was welcome news for their residents and family and friends as we enter the colder season meaning catch-ups can continue to take place, instead of, or in addition to, outdoor visiting already offered for those able.
