Activities at Spen Court Care Home
Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.
Angela Blackburn
My name is Angela and I am the Head Activities Coordinator here at Spen Court. I get so much satisfaction out of knowing I have made a difference to people’s days and have filled the home with a sense of community and happiness.
We feel it is important to build community connections and maintain our resident’s social interaction outside the care home.
We ensure we deliver a person-centered program of events and activities and build strong relationships with our residents, their families and friends.

Life at Spen Court Care Home

It's a boy!
Residents and colleagues at Spen Court held a surprise baby shower for one of the team as lock-down restrictions have left them unable to have a family gathering. Residents were delighted to step in and share the afternoon with a small party. Delicious snacks and treats were served alongside the fun afternoon of games and laughter. It was a fun afternoon for all!
Games at Spen Court
Residents at Spen Court enjoy a varied life enrichment programme to keep the mind, body and soul active. Each day there are popular group activities bringing everyone together each day in the morning and afternoon along with individual Resident centred activities.
High on the agenda and lots of fun is their popular game sessions, Resident Irene is delighted to be winning at a game of Connect4. The laughter and fun this session produces is priceless. Another popular game is carpet bowls which really gets the competitive juices flowing and the residents are very good at it.
Residents go for gold!
Staff and residents showed their friendly competitive streak as they took to their marks in a selection of games, an interactive game of parachutes, and let their fun-filled competitive streak come out to play! It is a great opportunity for all our residents to engage in a bit of fun and exercise, or to sit down and enjoy a cup of tea and read the many letters that we have received from our local community.
We always encourage our residents to keep active. With spring on the way, we had a great opportunity to have some indoor fun before we can get outside to enjoy our gardens. Our residents and their guests really enjoyed today and it was lovely to see so many of them getting involved. It reminded all of us of when we were kids at school!
A breath of fresh air
Residents of Spen Court took to the homes beautiful garden to take advantage of the recent glorious weather. Everyone commented on how much better they felt for grabbing a breath of fresh air, feeling the sun on their faces and checking on the progress of the plants, including the colourful pots that have just been added.
A Toast to the Heroes
Residents of Spen Court celebrated VE Day with a British tea party and singalong to commemorate 75 years since the end of the Second World War, raising a glass to the heroes of WW2.
Staff and residents at Spen Court, along with people all over the UK, joined together for the ‘Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2’. Residents who fought for our country stood among us for a two minute silence and finished with a salute to say thank you to their fellow veterans, who were also their friends.
The home wrote messages, played war-time music and had a singalong as they watched a virtual performance of a tribute wartime vocalist, reminiscing with each other about what they were doing when victory in Europe was announced.
Many of our residents have very clear memories of the Second World War, and reminisced about their experiences, so it’s a privilege to remember and celebrate with them. We had a lovely day, and we are making sure extra effort is focused on creating an enjoyable environment for all of our residents, whilst ensuring that the group activities are smaller, adhering to social distancing advice.
