Activities at Strachan House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Residents make a bee-line

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Strachan house care home in Edinburgh were buzzing when they celebrated World Bee Day on May 20th.

Created by the UN, World Bee Day is an annual global event raising awareness of the importance of bees and beekeeping for the survival of our ecosystems.  Three out of four food crops across the globe rely on bees and other pollinators but those pollinators are under threat from human activities.

Residents had a bee-rilliant time having a talk from Lauriston castle resident bee keeper john Jeffrey. We learnt about the history of bee-keeping and the importance of bees for food production,  we had a zoom meeting  with john our  local bee keeper virtually and enjoying a tour of his hives, we also held a tasting session of his local honey he makes at Lauriston castle as well as having a bee -biscuit with our cup of tea, making a bee home for the garden and planting some bee friendly flowers in the garden.

Carer celebrates 15-years long service

A carer at Strachan House in Edinburgh has received a prestigious 15 Year Service Award in celebration of working at Barchester Healthcare for 15 years.

Lyra Quintanilla, now carer, started at Barchester in May 2006 and has worked with residents and their relatives to ensure that their needs have been met over the years.

Floral demonstration with Blooming Haus

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Strachan House care home in were treated to an interactive virtual floristry masterclass courtesy of Master Florist, Michal Kowalski, from Blooming Haus.

Blooming Haus started with a small pop-up shop in Chelsea.  They have since blossomed spectacularly on to the floristry scene as ‘floral engineers’, carving themselves an outstanding reputation as one of the UK’s most innovative floral design studios.

A peek behind the scenes at Knowsley

Here at Strachan House we were pleased to be able to dive into the wild safari life of Knowsley Safari and to enjoy an amazing live stream tour of the park’s grounds.

Our residents were smiling and laughing as they got up close and personal with some of the safari’s most popular animals, including giraffes and meerkats.

We had a wonderful time learning more about the animals and enjoying some live feeding demonstrations.

Residents have fun with Green Goddess event

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Strachan House care home in Edinburgh were treated to an armchair work out courtesy of the Green Goddess, Diana Moran, and Shackleton’s furniture company, followed by a mindfulness session led by Shackleton’s Emma Raybould.
