Activities at Sutton Grange Care Home
Here at Sutton Grange we work really hard at providing a range of activities to suit our residents needs. We understand that everyone is different and we enjoy supporting our residents in whatever activities they would like to take part in. With a dedicated Activities co-ordinator and a friendly team of volunteers we are always busy with activities. We have several clubs including; gardening, film, craft, music, puzzles, and singing. We enjoy live music and entertainment, both in and outside of the home, and have regular outings on the minibus to local places of interest. Residents take part in animal assisted therapy, afternoon tea, arts and crafts classes, and visits from local community groups and school children. We believe it is important to provide stimulating, meaningful and relevant activities for our residents in order to make friends, and build a warm community to live.
Alison Wareing
Hi, I'm Alison. I am the Activities Assistant here at Sutton Grange, I joined the team in 2016.
I grew up in the local area and started my career working with animals. After I had my daughter, and before I joined Barchester, I trained as a teacher and taught lipreading and communication. The skills I learnt have been invaluable in my role today.
Now, I fill my days spending time with our wonderful Residents, helping them to live their lives to the fullest. I try to make a difference in someone’s life each day.

Activities and Events Partnerships
As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies
Life at Sutton Grange Care Home
Musical mystery tour
Our homes had a brilliant time with curator Sarah Deters as she took us on a virtual ‘Music Through the Ages’ tour of St Cecilia’s Hall: Concert Room and Music Museum.
Our residents were thrilled to discover weird and wonderful musical instruments, hear their unusual sounds, and find out how instruments have changed over the last 500 years.
The virtual live event explored the world-renown collection of musical instruments on display at St Cecilia’s Hall, Scotland’s oldest concert hall.
Residents host Eurovision with sister homes
Barchester’s Sutton Grange Care Home, in Banks, got into the Eurovision spirit by joining a virtual sing-off, competing against their sister homes across the North of England.
Sutton Grange’s staff and residents pulled out all the stops by dressing up in their finery to perform Sweet Caroline in front of some of the other Barchester care homes in Scotland and the north of England. Each home took its turn to perform their chosen song and be marked out of 20 by the other competing homes on catchiness and entertainment value to create a Eurovision-esque leader board.
Garden party
We made the most of the wonderful weather by having a big garden party. Our residents partied the afternoon away to the beautiful voice of entertainer Rachel Rose.
As you can see the residents loved having a dance and said how much they enjoyed the singing and refreshments throughout the afternoon.
An afternoon at the Opera
Our homes had a fabulous time with the talented soprano Astrid Joos from Street Theatre. Astrid spoke about a selection of famous operas and our residents were treated to performances of wonderful arias from operas well-known to all, such as ‘Giuditta’, ‘Don Giovanni’ and ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’.
It was a lovely experience, truly enjoyed by all.
Wimbledon
Our residents enjoyed watching Wimbledon on our big screen whilst ice cream, Pimms and cake were served. Everyone had a wonderful time cheering on their favourite tennis stars.
Dr Tim Howard discusses book
Residents across our homes had a lovely time joining Dr Tim Howard, 4th generation GP, whose whole life has been about patient care, for an exciting virtual event to discuss his novel ‘Let’s Kill All The Lawyers’.
The novel is a medical fiction thriller that explores the impact of life and death events, mistakes and forgiveness, and the impact of law and justice on the day- to-day lives of ordinary people doing their best in difficult circumstances.
Residents had the chance to ask their own questions once the discussion was over and a great time was had by all.

Come along as we're joined by wonderful local organisation Carousel as they host their weekly Memories R Made Dementia Choir at our home. Everyone is welcome!
