Activities at Sutton Grange Care Home

Our teams are trained to enrich the lives of residents through stimulating the mind, body and soul, and taking the time to learn about each person to ensure everyone receives support that adds enrichment to their life.

Here at Sutton Grange we work really hard at providing a range of activities to suit our residents needs. We understand that everyone is different and we enjoy supporting our residents in whatever activities they would like to take part in. With a dedicated Activities co-ordinator and a friendly team of volunteers we are always busy with activities. We have several clubs including; gardening, film, craft, music, puzzles, and singing. We enjoy live music and entertainment, both in and outside of the home, and have regular outings on the minibus to local places of interest. Residents take part in animal assisted therapy, afternoon tea, arts and crafts classes, and visits from local community groups and school children. We believe it is important to provide stimulating, meaningful and relevant activities for our residents in order to make friends, and build a warm community to live.

Activities Assistant

Hi, I'm Alison. I am the Activities Assistant here at Sutton Grange, I joined the team in 2016.

I grew up in the local area and started my career working with animals.  After I had my daughter, and before I joined Barchester, I trained as a teacher and taught lipreading and communication.  The skills I learnt have been invaluable in my role today.

Now, I fill my days spending time with our wonderful Residents, helping them to live their lives to the fullest. I try to make a difference in someone’s life each day.

A Cracking Easter!

Easter was absolutely ‘cracking’ here at Sutton Grange – the season has been full of fun, laughter, healthy competition and community spirit.

Our Wooden Egg Competition was a real hit, there were so many creativity entries, it was a tough job for Residents to choose their winner.  A big Congratulations to our talented Receptionist, Linzi who was crowned the outright winner for her entry and masterpiece.  Thank you to everyone who participated and took time to decorate their eggs – the creativity really shone through.

On Easter Sunday we were treated to a visit from the Easter bunny who delivered some delicious chocolate treats to both Residents and staff – it was smiles all round!

And that’s not all, we welcomed our young friends from our Baby and Toddler Group to join us for an egg hunt in the garden.  It was a wholesome day where Residents were able to relive their younger years through the eyes of the children.

Happy Easter from Everyone at Sutton Grange!

Meet the Owls

Recently we had the incredible honour of welcoming John the Owl Man to our home for a captivating talk about these magnificent creatures!

John introduced us to some amazing owls, starting with Holly the Barn Owl. Did you know Holly can eat a whopping 8 mice a day? She’s got some super hearing, too — able to detect mice 10 feet underground! And believe it or not, she loves watching TV!

Next, we met Sam, the majestic Eagle Owl. He’s the second-largest owl in Europe and can hunt animals as big as deer in the wild. With only 81 Eagle Owls currently counted in Britain, we are so lucky to hear about his fascinating life.

The talk was engaging and informative, and everyone enjoyed a stroke and a cuddle with these incredible creatures. Thank you, John, for sharing your passion and love for owls with us.

We can’t wait for the next visit!

Making Memories with Local Dementia Choir

Every Wednesday afternoon at 3pm Sutton Grange has become a hub of creativity and joy with the arrival of the Memories R Made choir. This vibrant group engages residents and the local community through a delightful array of activities, including bingo, musical quizzes, singing, dancing, and Makaton songs, all designed to evoke cherished memories and foster a sense of community.

This week’s session was particularly magical, highlighted by a beautiful musical performance led by Beth, who played the flute with grace and skill. Residents joined in with a variety of instruments, filling the room with a symphony of sounds and a spirit of unity that was truly uplifting. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as everyone engaged in the musical fun.

David’s enchanting xylophone performance added another layer to the afternoon’s festivities. His lively tunes had residents tapping their feet and singing along, creating an infectious energy that radiated throughout the care home. The combination of instrumentals, singing, and dancing sparked joy in the hearts of the residents, igniting memories of times spent with family and friends.

A huge thank you again to the Carousel Team and their Memories R Made Choir - it's a weekly highlight for all of us at Sutton Grange!

Intergenerational Play Time

On the second Wednesday of every month, Sutton Grange Care Home transforms into a hub of laughter and joy as its beloved baby and toddler group gathers for a heart-warming morning of fun and connection.

This month’s meeting was no exception, filled with delightful activities that brightened the spirits of residents and little ones alike.  As parents and their toddlers arrived, the energy in the room was palpable. Residents eagerly awaited the arrival of their young visitors, and when the doors opened, a wave of excitement swept through the care home. The event kicked off with a lively sing-along of cherished nursery rhymes, where residents joined in enthusiastically. The familiar tunes transported them back to their own childhoods, creating an atmosphere of nostalgia and joy that filled the air.

With smiles on their faces, the toddlers enthusiastically participated, clapping their hands and dancing along to the music. The sound of laughter echoed through the care home as the young ones and seniors bonded over song, forging connections that elevate the spirit and promote intergenerational understanding.

Local Co-op Donates Flowers

In a heart-warming display of community spirit, the Coop at Banks recently donated around 25 bunches of vibrant flowers to the residents of Sutton Grange Care Home. This thoughtful gesture not only brightened the care home’s environment but also brought joy and a sense of purpose to the residents, encouraging them to engage in creative expression.

Upon receiving the colourful blooms, residents at Sutton Grange were eager to roll up their sleeves and get creative. Armed with vases, scissors, and their imaginations, they arranged the flowers into stunning displays. Each arrangement was unique, reflecting the personalities and preferences of those involved. With every snip and placement, the atmosphere at Sutton Grange came alive with laughter and conversation.

So thanks to Allison Foy from Banks Co-op for their thoughtful donation that has not only beautified Sutton Grange Care Home but also fostered connections, prompted delightful conversations, and provided an opportunity for creativity. As the residents continue to enjoy the aftermath of their floral arrangements, they are reminded of the kindness that blooms within their community.

Sisters' Scooter Joy!

At Sutton Grange Care Home, a heartwarming reunion unfolded as three spirited sisters—Joyce, Elizabeth, and Janet—were delighted to meet a group of vintage scooter enthusiasts, the Southport Sandgrounders. The occasion sparked nostalgia and joy, offering the sisters a chance to cherish their fond memories of two-wheeled adventures from their youth, all while enjoying the company of fellow scooter lovers.

Among the various scooters showcased by the Sandgrounders, the oldest model was a 1966 Vespa, which resonated with Joyce as she fondly remembered her rides on a similar bike. The Lambretta was produced in the 1980s, evoked memories for Janet of her youthful escapades, evoking nostalgia that transcended the decades.

The encounter with the Southport Sandgrounders will surely remain etched in their minds, sparking joy and laughter long after the scooter engines have quieted down. Many thanks to Jenny, Martyn, Chris , Martin and Alan from the Southport Sandgrounders Scooter Club for visiting Sutton Grange and we look forward to you coming again soon.

Southport Flower Show

It’s that time of year again The Southport Flower Show day one as a washout but day two the sun shone down on us.

The exhibitions were unbelievable, and the people were out in their droves. Everyone has worked so hard on their displays, our residents enjoyed everything. They couldn’t believe the crowds and the wonderful flowers and stalls. It’s well worth a visit if you are free this weekend our residents highly recommended it.

We took loads of photos to do a little photo show at gardening club next week.

Sutton Grange will be having their own flower show in September so take a few snaps of your own gardens and hanging baskets in full bloom for our photo competition

Look out on Facebook for more information coming soon.

Clothes Sale

Last week at Sutton Grange we had our first clothes sale, this sale gave residents a chance to shop without leaving Sutton Grange. It was a resounding success, there was a choice of trousers, skirts and tops. It was so popular the residents have asked for us to do anyone clothes sale later in the year.

Obviously all our activities are person centred around the residents we have staying with us at the time.

Sutton Grange's 10th Birthday

This August marks Sutton Grange’s 10th anniversary and celebrations are took place in Sutton Grange, this weekend.

Here at Sutton Grange we threw a special 10th Birthday party to celebrate in style.

We organised a fantastic 10th Birthday Party which included a raffle and tombola to celebrate our residents, their families and friends, and our hard-working staff members. We raised £112.50 for the raffle which is going to the injured girls in Southport.

Our talented chef prepared delicious sweet and savoury treats and refreshing drinks for all to enjoy.

To everyone’s delight, we were joined by Off their Rockers who sang throughout the afternoon.

We’ve loved getting to know our residents over the years. Each day is filled with the things that matter the most to them and our care is always tailored to their unique needs and preferences.

We would like to take this lovely opportunity to say a big thank you all families, friends, our local community and our amazing staff for all their dedication and support over the years and always.

Gardening Club

This week's Gardening Club brought some of the best weather of the week. So outdoors we went for vegetable week!

Residents and families chatted while planting our tomatoes in hanging baskets. It will be good to see how they grow as we’ve not grown them in baskets before. We also planted green beans, mini cucumbers, peppers and chillies. Who doesn’t love a Scotch Bonnet! All our plants were purchased at our local garden centre, Briarlee Garden Centre.

We can't wait to see how our hard work grows!

Alpacas Come to Visit

We had a visit from the wonderful Poppywood Alpacas!

We have learnt all about what they eat how to look after them, we got a chance to look at wool produced from the Alpacas. All 3 alpacas were boys, named Marmalade, Dobbie & Doubledecker and they all live at home with a total of 53 other alpacas!

Thanks to Vivian and her family for a wonderful afternoon. This was what Vivian wanted as a birthday present, so the birthday girl enjoyed her birthday treat, as did everyone else who was brave enough to come and see the three beautiful creatures. We had a wonderful time!

We took a trip out to the local hub for their 'Big Lunch and Open Day' event for the community. There was lots of opportunity to meet new people and try something new, which our residents all really enjoyed. They also loved a browse of the stalls, and the various demonstrations!

Alison, our Activities Assistant, and one of our residents even got their faces painted and joined in the Zumba class! They had a great time. We, of course, finished the afternoon with an ice cream from the ice cream van which just topped off the day.

200 Years of Cadbury's

Day 1 of Dementia Action Week was all about REMINISCING and sharing those precious memories that light up our hearts.

Our wonderful residents and dedicated staff gathered together for an incredibly special Live Virtual Event with chocolate giant Cadbury UK to hear about their incredible 200 year history, have a Cadbury themed quiz and take a trip down memory lane to reminisce of the nation’s most loved chocolate during Dementia Action Week.

A huge thank you to Cadbury for making the day even sweeter! We were thrilled to receive the Memory Bar Boxes, each filled with Dairy Milk bars wrapped in various designs celebrating Cadbury's rich 200-year history. It was not only a treat for the taste buds but also a beautiful bridge to the past for many of our residents.

Here's to more wonderful days ahead!
