Activities at Thistle Hill Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Life at Thistle Hill Care Home

Residents celebrate Barchester's 30th anniversary

This year marks Barchester’s 30th anniversary and celebrations are taking place in all Barchester care services up and down the country across the month of November.

At the Thistle Hill Care Centre. Our activities coordinator Daria hosted a special coffee morning to celebrate this momentous milestone.  Our home GM Mandy was on hand to cut the cake, marking our momentous anniversary.

We’ve loved getting to know our residents over the years. Each day is filled with the things that matter the most to them and our care is always tailored to their unique needs and preferences.

We would like to take this lovely opportunity to say a big thank you all families, friends, our local community and our amazing staff for all their dedication and support over the years and always.

The afternoon saw a very energetic weekly exercise class with Chris, Daria and Carole.

Our fabulous resident ambassador Margaret donated a collection of stylish pants to the home, which were expertly modelled by Isobel and the team on Ripley.

Remembrance Day

On Remembrance Day our residents and colleagues joined the nation in remembering those who made the greatest sacrifice and gave their lives across all conflicts.

A group of our residents including two former RAF servicemen joined the local community in paying their respects at the Knaresborough Castle War Memorial Service.

Bonfire Night

Residents from around the home joined Daria and Mark in our Memory Lane Café to make some scrumptious caramelized apples.

The evening saw the culmination of the day's activities with a dazzling firework display in our Quad Garden, and also featured a virtual bonfire on display for our residents and families in attendance.

Century celebrations for Resident

Celebrations have been in full swing at the Thistle Hill Care Centre, as one of its residents reaches her centenary in style.  Joyce Bake was joined by staff, relatives, friends and other residents as she received a telegram in recognition of her landmark birthday. A champagne reception was held at the home and guests enjoyed a special birthday cake made by the home’s Activities Coordinator Mark.

Joyce was born on the 7th October 1922 the same year as Judy Garland and the year that the BBC was founded. Joyce has seen four reigning monarchs in her lifetime, nineteen Prime Ministers and witnessed world changing events including the Second World War, the birth of the NHS, The rise of television and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Joyce recently came to the Thistle Hill Care Centre, where she is enjoying a new chapter of her life.

Royal Botanic Garden

Our homes enjoyed a wonderful virtual tour of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh with Community Engagement Manager, Charlotte Walker, and Botanic Cottage Operations Co-ordinator, Laura Gallagher.

The residents were thrilled to learn more about the history of the beautiful Garden, which is now a home to an impressive plant collection from around the world.

Charlotte and Laura also gave a demonstration of making fresh herbal tea and were happy to answer our questions.  The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all who joined.

Oktoberfest

Residents at the Thistle Hill Care Centre came together to celebrate Oktoberfest, held over a two-week period and ending on the first Sunday in October.

The festival originated on October 12, 1810, in celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria, who later became King Louis I, to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.

Residents at the Thistle Hill Care Centre enjoyed celebrating the world’s largest folk festival by taking part in an authentic German experience, by enjoying a live cooking demonstration, listening and singing along to German music, watching a Bavarian band on YouTube ,staff dressing up in costumes, taking part in an Oktoberfest themed quiz
