Activities at Tyspane Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Life at Tyspane Care Home

Christmas Party

Christmas Party

We decided to celebrate to celebrate our annual Christmas buffet with residents, relatives and guests. We were joined by the Grumpy Old Men, who played to us long into the night.

Residents, their relatives and staff all enjoyed themselves and everyone looked extremely festive.

Going for Gold

Going for Gold

Residents and staff laced up their trainers and warmed up for their weekly session of flexicise and singing.

Staff and residents could be seen flexing their muscles - even those who had suffered a stroke were going for gold in this exercise class. The staff encourage residents to flex the upper parts of their body, which will hopefully encourage them to keep active. At the end of the class, as a warm down, Physio Assistant, Babs Spear, had all the group join in with singing to help their lungs; residents were singing Durham Town and many other songs, and really enjoying their sessions. Even those living with Dementia could remember the words of some songs and could be seen singing along to the music.

Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night

We celebrated bonfire night on Monday 7th November. In celebration, welet off a selection of fireworks once the sun had set.

The residents enjoyed traditional bonfire night treats, including hot dogs with lashing of onions, treacle toffee and parkin beautifully prepared by our chefs.

Chatting to the Alpacas

Chatting to the Alpacas

Residents really enjoyed keeping the alpacas company when they came to visit Tyspane back in the summer.

100th Birthday at Tyspane

100th Birthday at Tyspane

Celebrations have been in full swing at Tyspane Care Home, as one of its residents reaches her centenary in style. Mrs Gladys Harvey was joined by staff, relatives, friends and other residents as she received a telegram from the Queen in recognition of her landmark birthday on 3rd February. A splendid buffet reception was held at the home and guests enjoyed a special birthday cake made by her daughter’s friend. Gladys was born in Bromborough and she moved to Cornwall when she was 10 years old. She worked as a music teacher until her deafness became acute and she had to give up teaching and took up a job at Tottles music shop instead. Gladys says the secret of her long life was keeping active. She used to enjoy being a county bowls player, playing for Kensey vale bowling club and Dunheved bowling club, and in younger years she was a keen tennis and badminton player. Gladys has lived at Tyspane Care Home for the past 3 ½ years, where she celebrated her 100th birthday. She was amazed to have so much fuss made about her and was delighted to have so many of her family attend her birthday celebrations. Among those relatives attending were her daughter, son-in-law and one of her two grandsons Craig, who has recently came across from Malta (her other grandson lives in Australia). Gladys also has five great grandchildren. Gladys’ daughter said: “Mum is and has been a fantastic Mum, grandma and great-grandma and friend to so many over the past hundred years, and it’s wonderful to be with her on this very special day to say just how proud she makes us feel.” Monica Watterson General Manager of Barchester Tyspane care home said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating a truly remarkable lady as she reaches this amazing milestone. Gladys is a lovely lady and a popular resident who is loved by all the staff. She has been witness to so many things this last 100 years. It is a privilege to know her and celebrate this day with her.”
