Activities at Washington Grange Care Home

Our group and individual activities are designed to mentally and physically stimulate those we care for. We try to organise a mix of activities and events that reflect the interests and capabilities of residents for anyone and everyone to participate in. Our evenings of afternoon entertainment is enjoyed by residents and their families, who are all encouraged to sing along and dance. We try to involve our local community; members of the clergy often visit to hold lovely afternoon church services for residents. It is essential that our team are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for those we support through person-centred activities, and that everyone has a fun and active time here at Washington Grange.

Activities and Events Partnerships

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies

Life at Washington Grange Care Home

Valentine's virtual event

Across our homes we had a fantastic time joining, Kathryn Delve, Master Florist, for a Valentine’s-inspired live virtual flower arranging demonstration. Kathryn shared brilliant and creative ways to decorate our tables with beautiful flowers that are sure to make your heart swoon!

Those participating in this virtual event put their skills to the test and followed along with some amazing creations of their own.  Residents truly enjoyed the experience.

Friends Reunited

A chance meeting as two of our residents reunited after many years apart.  Residents, Mavis and Joan were both nurses during their career and worked together for many years and were great friends.  Joan resides in our Memory Lane community and whilst visiting the homes hair salon for a little pampering recognised Mavis instantly as they passed.  It was very emotional for everyone.

Home present cheque to local charity

We have recently presented our local North East Dementia with a cheque on behalf of Barchester's Charitable Foundation.

One of our residents commented: “What a lovely afternoon, and an incredible charity!”

Barchester’s Charitable Foundation makes a real difference to the lives of older people and young adults with disabilities in England, Scotland and Wales. Their funding focuses on connecting or re-connecting people with others in their local community in order to reduce isolation and loneliness.

Medical Detection Dogs

Across our services residents had a fantastic time during a special live virtual event, led by Emilia from Medical Detection Dogs. Emilia took us on a journey to discover how the organisation began training dogs to support people with complex health conditions, saving their lives on a daily basis.

Using their amazing sense of smell, these dogs can identify odour changes emitted prior an episode and alert the person to take preventative action.

We were introduced to the wonderful dogs and the science behind the sniff.  It was a delightful experience for everyone, especially our canine-loving residents.

Big Quiz of the Year

All over the country our care homes and hospitals linked up for Barchester’s Big Quiz of the year!

Residents tested their knowledge with a variety of questions, from historical humdingers and musical musings to pictorial puzzlers and connective conundrums.

Everyone who participated had a fantastic time and enjoyed some friendly competition.

Festive crafts

Residents of Washington Grange enjoy their regular and popular arts and craft sessions. Over the festive period we spent time making, decorating and writing cards to loved ones, friends, staff members and members of the local community.

Everyone was encouraged to work on their skills, some residents preferred to draw on their cards, other to write festive poems and Christmas wishes.  These group activities got us into the Christmas spirit and the cards turned out beautifully.
