Activities at Woodside House Care Home

Activities at Woodside House

Our activities team deliver a wide variety of mentally and physically stimulating activities and events for those we support, including coffee afternoons, which we hold every month for the local community, regular outings in our minibus, and visits from entertainers and musicians. Monthly resident meetings help us to ensure that those living here are getting the most out of our activities programme, and that our social events reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible. From growing our own vegetables to making giant paper-mâché animals, there is always something fun going on at Woodside House.

Sam Lake

Activities Coordinator

My name is Sam and I lead our Activities Team at Woodside House.

I have been at Woodside House since 2004 and I love it here. I am responsible for ensuring that the residents are able to participate in sociable, fun and rewarding activities. My team and I are very passionate about our work and love putting smiles on the residents' faces.

We involve the residents in the planning of our activity calendars and encourage residents to continue with the hobbies that they have enjoyed throughout their lives. We will support every resident to try new things and we love learning from our residents every day.

International Nurses Day

International Nurses Day

Coinciding with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, International Nurses Day, held on Wednesday 12th May, is a day to celebrate nurses and care staff around the world. Residents and staff at Woodside House, were happy to get involved by hosting a much deserved afternoon tea in the garden, a certificate of thanks and some wonderful luxury chocolates.

In 2021, the World Health Organisation is seeking to highlight the ways in which nurses are innovating and to explore what the future of nursing could look like. This year, more than ever, we are hugely indebted to all our care staff, and we are incredibly proud to applaud their extraordinary efforts and commitment, on this special day of recognition. International Nurses’ Day is a day to give thanks for the dedication of care givers everywhere, who go above and beyond the call of duty to deliver extraordinary care and support.

Elena, General Manager at the home, said: “At Woodside House, our nurses and staff are hard-working, dedicated, and passionate about caring for others, and that compassion and commitment has shone through even more over the past year. They continue to work tirelessly, and I’m proud of the professionalism and duty of care they uphold. All their efforts are focused on delivering the best possible care for our residents, so it’s nice to take this time to show our appreciation in return. It is also lovely to celebrate our residents who were nurses themselves and thank them for all the hard work they did during their careers.”

Entertainment In The Garden

We have had one of our wonderful entertainers back into the garden!

The residents were over the moon to have firm favourite Chris Wilson back at Woodside House. Now that entertainers are allowed to perform in our garden again we have a long list who are keen to get back to entertaining our residents.

Seeing Chris and enjoying his show really makes things feel as though normal is just around the corner.

Hairdressing Is Back On The Agenda

Just like the rest of the country, residents had been waiting patiently for months to get their hair styled and so they were delighted to be able to book in for a long overdue cut and blow dry now that the hairdresser is allowed back into the home.

Elena, General Manager commented: “It really has felt like Christmas today, our residents are just so delighted to be able to get a good cut and to feel like themselves again.  It is wonderful to see them all so happy, we have really missed our hairdressers – it is fantastic to be able to welcome them back again.”

Disly, a resident, said: “I can’t remember another time in my life when I had to go so long between haircuts! It feels so good to be back to my normal style.”

Our hairdresser has been fully vaccinated and is following the Barchester Healthcare PPE policy.

The Queen's Birthday

Our fabulous ladies raised a toast another wonderful lady this week. We celebrated the Queen's birthday with an Afternoon Tea, a toast to Her Majesty and a royal-themed quiz.

Whilst it has been a difficult time for Her Majesty, at Woodside House we still wanted to celebrate the life of this inspirational woman and all that she has done for our country.

Baking Club Creates Crumble Masterpieces

The Woodside House Baking Club was hard at work again today creating Crumble masterpieces!

This week there were only minor disagreements over who had the superior family recipe for the perfect Crumble. (In the interests of peace I must say that each Crumble was equally delicious.)

Baking and swapping family recipes, tips and secret ingredients is a wonderful way of socialising, practising skills and having fun - plus there is lots of fantastic Crumble at the end of it!

Armchair Yoga In The Atrium

Moving around to keep fit and stay limber is an important part of health and well-being and is always a focus at Woodside House.

This week we've enjoyed another session of armchair yoga with the motivating Isabel Hewitt. Isabel always ensures the sessions are fun and full of laughter, it barely feels like exercise.

The more we move, the more of chef's cakes we can enjoy!
