Activities at Woodside House Care Home

Activities at Woodside House

Our activities team deliver a wide variety of mentally and physically stimulating activities and events for those we support, including coffee afternoons, which we hold every month for the local community, regular outings in our minibus, and visits from entertainers and musicians. Monthly resident meetings help us to ensure that those living here are getting the most out of our activities programme, and that our social events reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible. From growing our own vegetables to making giant paper-mâché animals, there is always something fun going on at Woodside House.

Sam Lake

Activities Coordinator

My name is Sam and I lead our Activities Team at Woodside House.

I have been at Woodside House since 2004 and I love it here. I am responsible for ensuring that the residents are able to participate in sociable, fun and rewarding activities. My team and I are very passionate about our work and love putting smiles on the residents' faces.

We involve the residents in the planning of our activity calendars and encourage residents to continue with the hobbies that they have enjoyed throughout their lives. We will support every resident to try new things and we love learning from our residents every day.

Mum's The Word At Woodside House

Residents at Woodside House celebrated Mother’s Day with a welcome return to indoor visiting. The home was beautifully decorated with fresh flowers for the occasion.

For residents at Woodside House care home the long awaited reunion with one family member has become a reality, as one single named visitor is now allowed to visit each resident in their bedroom, just in time for Mother’s Day.

There has been much anticipation of this moment by families and residents alike. Guidance was issued by the Government on March 4th and Barchester Healthcare is proceeding with a safe and cautious approach to visiting. Strict protocols are in place with all visitors required to have a negative Lateral Flow Device test result before being allowed into the home, and infection control measures and social distancing in place for every visit, with hand holding allowed but not recommended.

Despite the need for testing and social distancing, it was still welcome news for so many residents and their family members to be able to meet in the comfort of their bedroom. Residents and their families enjoyed getting together and catching up face to face.

To celebrate Mother’s Day with residents at the home, staff arranged Afternoon Tea, had a discussion about how the role of the mother has changed and reminisced about the residents’ childhood. The chef and team at the home prepared a Afternoon Tea to mark the day.

General Manager, Elena said: “We’ve all had a really lovely day. This is the first cautious step towards having a buzz of visitors in the home again. It was wonderful to see how happy it made the residents and their relatives. We have a great booking system in place to ensure the visits are well organised, and visitors are doing a great job of following the safety measures to keep everyone as safe as possible. For those that are not able to come inside the home we are pleased to be able to continue to offer visits in our visiting suites or outdoors when the weather allows, as well as video calls.”

St David's Day

Daffodils everywhere, Welsh cakes on the table and the smell of rarebit and leeks coming from the kitchen... it must be St David's Day!

St David's Day was honoured at Woodside House this week with all the traditional food, flowers and fun. We held Welsh quizzes, laughed at our attempts at place names, decorated with dragons and daffodils and enjoyed some delicious food. Our residents got really stuck in with cooking the rarebit and telling stories of holidays in Wales.

Preparing For Spring

The residents at Woodside House have been preparing our garden for Spring this week.

We are very fortunate to have a range of birds visit our beautiful gardens and we wanted to prepare for their Spring arrival. The residents have been choosing locations for bird feeders and filling them with food. With the weather getting better it has been a great week to get out in the sunshine and do some pottering in the gardens with friends.
