Activities at Ashfields Care Home

At Ashfields, we strive to make our care and services as person-centred as we possibly can, and this includes our provision of activities. We will give prospective residents a 'Getting to Know Me' booklet to fill out with their loved ones before their arrival, which includes a little life history and a tick sheet for a vast amount of activities. This enables us to offer bespoke activities and helps us to learn valuable information about residents and what might stimulate them in conversations and trips.

Our specialist activities and lifestyle staff make sure there are always meaningful activities to take part in, such as gardening, baking and trips out to various locations nearby, including local cathedrals, cafés, garden centres and much more.

Residents are encouraged to take part and we try to get every person out at least once a month to places they might be interested in visiting, but it is always their choice, ultimately. We believe that having choice is very integral in helping residents feel that they still have control of their lives.

Activities are provided by everyone in our home, from Carers and specialised activities staff, right through to the admin team.

We are a registered member of the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA), which means that we are always working to make the quality of life of all residents as high as possible by offering person-centred activities that aim to stimulate both mentally and physically.

Xen Greenwood

Activities Coordinator

My name is Xen and I am lucky enough to be the Activities Coordinator here at Ashfields.

I have experience working in care homes in Activities and leisure and lifestyle roles. In my own time I love to go antique shopping and making crafts.

I love being part of the Ashfields team and supporting our residents to live their best lives with fun, interesting, and varied activities available every week. I always feel its important for the residents to have the opportunity to explore new interests as well as keeping up with previous interests and hobbies.

World Cancer Day

Residents have been participating in arts and craft sessions in the home to create colourful pin ribbon badges to represent various cancers to raise funds for charity.

Residents held a meeting earlier this week to discuss each colour ribbon representing a different type of cancer specific for those that had lost loved ones, with bright pink representing all types of cancer.

Deputy Manager Joanna Wartacz wanted to encourage the fundraiser and had set a target of £200; if this target was reached, Joanna volunteered to shave off her eyebrows.

Residents and staff were all very supportive and were there to cheer on the participants as they began the fundraising challenge.

Taking part in this challenge has been a huge amount of fun and everyone at the home has been behind us all the way. It’s for such an important cause. I’m very glad to be able to do my bit to raise further awareness and money for the charity.

Ashfields raised a grand total of £250 by completing the challenge, which will be donated to Cancer Research.

Vaccination Day

All staff and residents at Ashfields are all delighted to have received the first dose of their COVID-19 vaccinations after what has been a very challenging year for everyone.

We’ve all been through such a difficult time and this feels like such a big step on the way to getting back to some normality. Now that everyone in the home has had their first dose, we feel like we’ve started on the long road to recovery.

Burns Night

Residents enjoyed participating in Scottish-themed events in celebration of Burns night.

Staff and residents at the home were involved in a number of activities, such as decorating the home with traditional tartan flags, participating in a cooking session, where homemade Scottish shortbread was made; a Burns Night-themed quiz and listening to the tunes of the traditional bagpipes after a resident kindly read a poem written by Robert burns himself.

International Flower Day

Residents celebrated International Flower Day by participating in varied flower-based activities.

Residents enjoyed looking at the different types of flowers, taking in the colours and the scents. This activity stimulated creative, sensory, cognitive and social needs whist enhancing residents wellbeing.

We would like to say a massive thank you to our local super markets, Tesco and Morrisons, for their ongoing support, donating these beautiful flowers and making our residents' day.

Delivering Joy

Ashfields joined Dunelm Norwich’s 2020 Christmas campaign, called ‘Delivering Joy’. Customers and colleagues were encouraged to take a tag from their Christmas tree detailing a first name and age of an Ashfields resident, and they kindly filled a shoe box with presents. The kind Community Champion visited Ashfields to deliver the presents.

Christmas Jumper Day

Christmas Jumper Day is an annual fundraising campaign organized by charity Save the Children in the UK.

On Friday 11th December, people are encouraged to make the world better with a sweater and raise funds for Save the Children by making a kind donation.

All residents and staff at Ashfields were encouraged to buy, borrow or decorate their own special Christmas jumpers. Some of the residents have got very creative and decorated their own,

Ashfields had their very own selfie station for the residents to take pictures for Christmas cards to their relatives, however, the props didn’t manage to stay in one place and the whole home was full of festive cheer!

What a fantastic way to raise money, as well as enhancing the well-being of residents living at Ashfields.
