Activities at Bedewell Grange Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Donna Brooks

Activities Coordinator

My Name is Donna. I am the activities co-ordinator at Bedewell Grange.

I joined Bedewell Grange in April 2022 and I bring lots of new exciting ideas to the role, having worked in the health and social care sector for the last 15 years. I am passionate about my role within the home and aim to bring a smile to all our residents faces through different types of activities.

I'm bright and bubbly, so aim to share this each day at work. I have experience in supporting our residents who are more able as well as doing sensory Namaste sessions with our residents who are less able.

As I get to know the residents likes and dislikes, if you would like to come and chat with me about your family member please pop in and see me.

Trip to Bede world museum and the Anglo Saxon farm village

Our ladies enjoyed visiting and learning of the Anglo Saxons and the change in farming. The buildings are developed and built on archaeological evacuations carried out in Northumberland.

Our Ladies enjoyed feeding the animals and visiting the huts. Our ladies found the experience really interesting especially Ruby who was evacuated to a farm during the war. We find it important to get out and around our local area as it helps keep us socialised and helps keep us motivated and and improves our spirit.

Baking Club

Here at Bedewell we enjoy baking sessions which brings back allot of memories of Sundays which were baking days. Our residents like to share recipes and reminisce of the good old days. We baked a ham and cheese a pizza which we baked from scratch including the base which was mixed and rolled out into the tin before adding our toppings. There is always a team spirit with our residents helping each other.

Open Day

We celebrated our open day with a party for our residents. There was lots of dancing and entertainment. We enjoyed a sweet cart , donut stand and glasses of bubbly which went down a treat. It was a successful day with visits booked  to look around our recently refurbished home. Our residents were joined by families who were in the party spirit and the children joined in with the entertainment even singing on the microphone with our entertainer.

Foundation Cook Off

Staff and residents are celebrating because their wonderful Managing Director, Fiona Fagan, from Barchester’s North East and Scotland Division, has stepped completely out of her comfort zone to compete in the Barchester Charitable Foundation Cook Off 2024.

Fiona went head-to-head with the Managing Directors from Barchester’s four other divisions and cooked up a storm to raise a phenomenal £24,595 for Barchester’s Charitable Foundation which helps connect vulnerable people and those living with a disability to community groups in their local area by providing grants to improve mobility and quality of life.  Each year the Foundation distributes thousands of pounds to individuals, small community groups and charities across England, Scotland and Wales.

Exploring the Eden Project

Residents across our homes had a fantastic time exploring the Eden Project virtually - an educational charity and visitor attraction based in Cornwall, featuring sprawling outdoor gardens and breathtaking biomes that house the largest indoor rainforest in the world.

During the session, residents who joined were reconnected with nature through their senses, memories and stories.  A big thank you to the community team at the Eden Project for the wonderful event.

Visit from Discovery zoo

We enjoyed a visit from discovery zoo learning about the different animals . Twiggy the Malaysian stick insect was a big hit with one of our ladies who has friends in Malaysia and couldn’t wait to tell them she had held in on her arm. The tortoise name was Flash and our residents were intrigues by him eating a huge chunk of tomato. The favourite was the long haired Guinea pig who got lots of cuddles.
