Activities at Braeburn Lodge Care Home

Our dedicated activities team are constantly dreaming up new and wonderful ways to support and stimulate the residents we look after. From trips to crafts, parties to skittles, musical performances and quizzes, we include something for everyone and pride ourselves on including everyone into the fun. We have a brilliant team of volunteers who help us to deliver more trips, support us at events and pop in for a cup of tea and chat. We have pet therapy at least once per week (sometimes twice!) and we take advantage of every school break by holding large scale events that we can invite families with children to. We have been developing ties with our neighbours since we first opened and thanks to this, we have successfully brought together our residents with local churches, choirs, Brownies groups, and schools. Whatever your interests are, here at Braeburn, there's something for everyone.

Yasmine Dawson

Activities Coordinator

I have worked at Braeburn Lodge since 2015. I started working as a carer and the activities side of the role really appealed to me. We organise a variety of activities to suit everybody’s preferences and abilities. I enjoy working at Braeburn and making a difference to the residents’ lives.

St Patrick's Day preparations

St Patrick’s Day was originally celebrated in Ireland with religious services and feasts in hour of Saint Patrick, one of Ireland’s patron saints. Today, this national day has become more than a single day of celebration on March 17th. It has become a festival of everything “Irish “across several days and even weeks.

In preparation for this wonderful day, all of our residents within our Memory Lane community, have been working extra hard, creating a lovely decorative environment for their dining room. Using different art mediums, our residents used their imagination and creativity to create suitable decorations for their communal display. It was also a great opportunity for each resident to engage with one another, sharing their past memories while also being treated to delicious, edible Irish treats.

London Ladies

As part of our International Women’s Day celebrations, Residents from across our services were thrilled to join tour guide, Mandy Morrow, for an exciting talk about some Legendary London Ladies.

Mandy shared the fascinating stories of eight ladies with us, from the one of the richest heiresses in the world to the original 'Roaring Girl'.

Everyone who participated truly enjoyed the experience and were delighted to take a walk down memory lane.

Ladies Tea Morning

Our monthly Ladies Tea mornings have become quite popular in our wonderful home. It’s the perfect opportunity for our ladies to get together, have a good old natter about their past adventures, while indulging on a good cup of tea and delicious treats.

Today’s Tea Morning was quite special as it was a Valentine’s themed event, where we focused on talking about our most loved family members. Our residents also spoke out their romantic getaways and how they loved to go abroad with their children also. It was certainly a heart filled Tea Morning at Braeburn this month!

A special Valentine’s Treat

Today was a very special day at Braeburn Lodge. All our residents and staff members received a personalised gift in aid of this romantic Day. We really wanted to spread the love amongst everyone. Our wonderful residents were also treated to a romantic candlelight lunch, as well as being serenaded by the lovely Nick Glover, who sang some wonderful songs dating back to the good old 50's and 60's.

As tradition goes, Saint Valentine wore a ring with a Cupid on it, a symbol of love that helped soldiers recognise him. He also handed out paper hearts to remind all Christians of their love for God. Today was not only a religious day, but also a day for sharing love. We certainly love all our residents at Braeburn lodge.

Candlemas celebrations at Braeburn

On this special day, we took some time out to celebrate Candlemas with some of our wonderful residents. Candlemas is known as the festival of light. It is celebrated on 2nd February to honour light warding off evil and death and assuring prosperity. Christians take candles to be blessed in church, while for those with a sweet tooth, this day is also a chance to eat sweet delights such as pancakes!

Our residents enjoyed the morning by reading about the history of this day, as well as watching a pre-recorded Candlemas church service, from The Church of England website. Residents from all four communities within our home joined us for this spiritual event, making it even more special. The prayers and hymns sang during this activity was enjoyed by all.

Eyes down for bingo bonzana

Across the country our homes and hospitals came together to find out which care home or hospital had the best Bingo players as we teamed up for Barchester’s Bingo Bonanza.

Residents were treated to some exciting virtual games of Bingo as part of Barchester’ very own game show series.

Everyone who participate had a fantastic time and enjoyed some friendly competition.
