Activities at The Cedars Care Home

Our teams are trained to enrich the lives of residents through stimulating the mind, body and soul, and taking the time to learn about each person to ensure everyone receives support that adds enrichment to their life.

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience, and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Lorraine Mounter

Activity Coordinator

Hello. My name is Lorraine and I love working with the residents at Cedars.  I started as a carer and then joined the activities team.  I love crafting and so this job is ideal as I can look after the residents, whilst we have fun, laughter and create new things together. I find it very rewarding to see the residents happy, smiling and enjoying their day.

In my spare time I enjoy reading, gardening and crafting.  I also have a horse and I look after my granddaughter.

Activities and Events Partnerships

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies

Classic Car Visit

Our residents enjoyed a visit from a relative’s family member, Robin's, MGA last week. Huge congratulations to Robin on all his hard work in restoring it.

Robin explained:

"In September 2019 after a long search for a classic car restoration project I found a US imported 1959 MGA in a complete but very poor state.

The task of stripping and refurbishing each individual component was challenging but fulfilling and taught me multiple skills particularly panel beating and welding to restore the bodywork.

Switching from left hand to right hand drive brought more challenges, especially cutting and welding the dashboard to switch the instruments across.

I spent around 3 1/2 years and over 3,000 hours of work to get the car on the road including preparing and re-spraying the bodywork.  I fitted a modern 5 speed gearbox, rebuilt a higher capacity engine and made changes to improve braking and handling.

So far I’ve driven my MGA over 1,000 miles and plan to keep driving it as much as I possibly can as it truly is a joy to drive."

Ladies Shopping Trip

The Pink Ladies and some of our lovely residents headed off on our minibus for some well deserved retail therapy.

First stop was The Range for Arts and Crafts materials then off to Costa for a winter warming drink and delicious cake.

This was just one of the trips our residents will be enjoying throughout January.

Bringing in the New Year with Sparkle!

New Year's Eve saw our wonderful residents being entertained by the ever popular entertainers 'Cosmic Sparkle'

Terry said “What a fabulous way to start the New Year.” and Marion added “such a wonderful evening spent with our friends.”

So much fun from armchair Okey Cokey, some old favourites like Sweet Caroline to Donald where your trousers and, to finish, Auld Lang Syne.

Happy New Year from all the Staff at Cedars!

Losing Ourselves in Literature

We welcome Dave and the Wiltshire Mobile Library to Cedars each month.

Research shows that reading helps improve capabilities such as memory, cognition, and attention span, especially in seniors. By strengthening memory retention, reading can actually slow the degenerative process of dementia and Alzheimer’s by keeping the mind limber.

Dave is a dab hand at searching for the books our residents request, from Thrillers to Animal studies, Historical Fiction to Architecture. He always goes the extra mile, in both how far he covers on the roads and the lengths he goes to to meet everyone's literary needs.

“Oh no he didn’t, Oh yes he did”

As part of our ongoing programme of theatre trips 8 of us boarded the minibus for a visit to Salisbury Playhouse to watch the Pantomime.
We had a fabulous fun filled time, not only was it a spectacular show, but as we attended a matinee, the theatre was full of children. One resident commented “Watching their reactions to the show was so joyful.” Mary had wanted to go to the Panto for years, her daughter is so pleased and said that her mum she really enjoyed the whole trip.
