Activities at Crandon Springs Care Home

We were delighted to host our local Neighbourhood Watch event recently, which was attended by Avon and Somerset Cyber Protect Officer, Megan Haldane and organised by one of our neighbours Paul Sage.

Megan gave a very informative, yet light and engaging talk about the ongoing threat of cyber security, online fraud and how we can better protect ourselves.

A packed room of around thirty local residents enjoyed the talk and I'm sure all took something away with them from it. I certainly did, and judging by one or two sheepish grins, I'm sure that I wasn't alone in changing some passwords when I got home!

And the winner is..

Our residents have spent the afternoon looking through all of the wonderful Easter Designs, sent in from the local nurseries and primary schools. There were so many fantastic entries that they struggled to pick their winner! 

The choice wasn’t easy, however they did eventually choose their favourite designs.

Celebrations have been in full swing at Crandon Springs, as one of our residents reaches her centenary in style.

Mary Lofts was joined by staff, relatives, friends and fellow residents as she received a telegram from the King in recognition of her landmark birthday. A champagne reception was held at the home and guests enjoyed a special birthday cake made by the home’s talented head chef, Stuart Constable.

Remarkably, this will be the second official correspondence that Mary has received from the Royal Family, having received a letter from the Queen in February 2012 when she celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary with her late husband John. Mary has lived a wonderful and varied life, coming from a farming family in Cheltenham, before proudly serving her country with the Wrens during the Second World War. She went on to move to London after the war and then latterly the Isle of Wight where she loved to sail, before coming to Crandon Springs where she is now enjoying a new chapter of her life.

Surrounded by an array of beautiful flowers and cards from well-wishers, Mary said: “I have had a wonderful day, it was delightful to spend my 100th birthday in the company of friends and my much-loved family.”

Amongst the relatives attending was Mary’s son Duncan, who played host for the afternoon to lots of guests. Speaking about his centenarian mother, he said: “Mary is and has been a fantastic mother and friend to so many over the past hundred years, and it’s wonderful to be with her on this very special day to say just how proud of her we are.”

Alexandria Bowman, General Manager of Barchester’s Crandon Springs care home added: “We’re delighted to be celebrating a truly remarkable woman as she reaches this amazing milestone. Mary is such a popular resident at Crandon Springs, and we look forward to celebrating many more birthdays as she breaks into her next century.”

Richard Hathway hosts the group at Crandon Springs Care Home on the 3rd Friday of the month from 2:00 - 5:30 pm. We normally watch an Opera DVD from the world's best opera houses, with top class singers and English subtitles. Always time for conversation and for informal discussion!  Members can lead sessions, and suggest operas that they'd like to see. New members extremely welcome
